"Half of the directorís job is in selecting his team, they really have to believe in you and the story thatís been created. And as a director you have to believe in them and their capabilities. Trust is how it works here. I canít generalize about Hollywood because I havenít worked there, but from what I understand the system is quite rigid there with rules and regulations."

Maryada Ramanna (2010)

Rajamouli was my biggest auteur discovery of this year. This, his remake of Buster Keatonís Our Hospitality (unseen by me), is possibly my favorite of his films. Its sweet humor cedes naturally when the hero narrative starts to make more sense and takes over. Rajamouliís world and sensibility is reliably goofy (the film features a talking bike!), but the guy has filmmaking chops. His sense of timing in the musical numbers, the way the music works in tandem with the gestures of his actors, suggests a private world where Rajamouli is simply enjoying himself Ė how much pleasure does he take in filming his actressesís bellies?

flieger and I recorded a podcast on Eega last year, Rajamouli's film about a man who is killed and is reincarnated as a fly, before I had seen any other of his films.

I also wrote a review for Sean's website on the epic, Baahubali: The Beginning, which as of right now is the 2nd highest grossing Indian film.

I love that we have a thread for Rajamouli. I'm sure I raised an eyebrow in 2016, but I was wrong.

1. RRR
2. Bāhubali: The Conclusion
3. Bāhubali: The Beginning
