#611: Loving / Arrival / Hacksaw Ridge
« on: November 11, 2016, 01:06:20 PM »

Aliens come to movie screens in a few different ways. Sometimes they come in peace; sometimes they come to destroy; and sometimes… well sometimes they just come. In ARRIVAL, the new sci-fi film from SICARIO director Denis Villeneuve, they do just come - and it’s up to Amy Adams' language specialist to figure out why. On this week's show, Josh and guest host Michael Phillips have a review, plus thoughts on Jeff Nichols’ LOVING and Mel Gibson's HACKSAW RIDGE.

This would probably need to be fleshed out in the spoiler section, but what part of Arrival was Josh and MP having a problem following? I'm genuinely curious, because I feel like I understood the plotting pretty well, but maybe I'm missing something?

Yeah, really can't get into it without SPOILERS! So stop reading now if you haven't seen Arrival... I can't speak for Michael, but I'll confess I didn't realize that the "flashbacks" were actually flash forwards until well into the credits. It's not really a criticism of the movie - as I said on the show, it's probably on me, as most people seem to have caught on earlier.

SPOILERS [for Arrival]

Yeah, for me the moment the film brings up timelines it starts to dawn, and the brief subplot with the Chinese leader at the climax explains how it works and how it differs from other movies that deal with time. That's where it became obvious to me what was happening.

SPOILERS
Yep, it all clicked finally with the Chinese leader convo. The only thing I feel stupid about is not taking to heart what Renner said earlier about how learning a new language can alter the way your brain works - which obviously explains why Adams has what otherwise seems like a 'gift' - as in some kind of supernatural gift, not a gift from the aliens.

SPOILERS
Yes, I think they did a great job at hinting without being overly obvious. There's also the moment when she's trying to come up with the term "zero-sum game" for her daughter, and Renner uses it in the current timeline.

Once you piece it together there's a bunch of that stuff - like the "TV show" she makes a drawing of, which is basically what they do with the aliens every time they go in.

Can we take better advantage the spoiler text function (this button: !) and make sure to identify the movie being spoiled? People coming to this thread late aren't going to know whether it's Arrival that being spoiled or Hacksaw Ridge or Loving.

Thanks!
