Same for me DH. Apparently Moana was an Italian pornstar so they changed it to Vaiana in Europe. That they took the time to record both versions of the lines (including in the songs) for both names is... impressive ? Anyway I'm calling her Moana because that's the original version.

But why two versions ? Is she only known in some European countries ? Do pornstar names attract US audiences ? I find this really annoying for some reason.

I think they might have overestimated how well-known she was in Europe. Either that or it was a case of doing for all Europe (or at least latin Countries) was actually easier than just Italy.

Obviously they didn't want their film to be associated with porn in any way... but didn't change it for the rest of the world because it wasn't a problem there. Not that it would have been here either, but I guess they played it safe, unspurprisingly. It doesn't bother me.

I enjoyed Moana quite a bit. The Clement crab reminded me (in a good way) of the goofy videos in Flight of the Conchords. It does take you out of the movie a bit, but it comes at just the right time. I also liked the Mad Max connection with the pirates, though it reminded me more of Dennis Hopper's floating mess in Waterworld. The songs worked for me, and checking them out again after the movie just reinforced it. The main Lin Manuel Miranda song "We Know the Way" is one that I suspect we'll see being performed at the Oscars. I wrote a review too if this interests anyone: http://www.ptsnob.com/2016/12/moana-review-disney.html
