My appreciation of Once has improved with every viewing. I don't see the same being the case with Sing Street, but time will tell. I rate them an A and a B, respectively.

It's obnoxious to post two lists in two days, but yesterday seemed like a perfect opportunity to try out a third Carney.

Sing Street
Once

Begin Again

Once (89 / 100)
Flora and Son (84 / 100)
Sing Street (80 / 100)
Begin Again (76 / 100)

Once is still in my top 100

I really connect with his films.

Once improves with every viewing for me and is now perhaps the film I most enjoy introducing people to. It's now one of three two-people-meet-and-talk films in my Top 100, alongside Before Sunset and new entry Weekend (Andrew Haigh, 2011), which had the great second-watch improvement for me of any film in a long while. I'm now counting on All of Us Strangers to be a cultural reset.

A recent, highly interrupted revisit of Sing Street wasn't as successful, with the film seeming much more unpolished than I remembered and really only fully succeeding for me over the last twenty minutes (which are enough to recommend the film).

I finally caught up with Begin Again a couple years ago, and it largely felt like an "overproduced" remake of Once, to borrow a metaphor from the earlier film. I would love to read up on Carney's experience making the film, especially seeing as it's something the character of Once and Sing Street presciently critique in the abstract. It's a passable film regardless, even though I hate the idea of someone watching it before they've seen Once. I would very much like Keira Knightley to cheer me up when I'm down.

Curious to catch up with Flora and Son.

Flora and Son certainly has its moments, but it's still Carney's weakest yet (of the ones I've seen). Ewe Hewson (as soon as I saw the name I knew she had to be Bono's daughter) is really great, and so is young Orén Kinlan, but JGL feels entirely out of place and comes off like a smug prick during his James Blunt rant. Not that I love Blunt or anything, but come down off your high horse. The songs are middling, but maybe they're supposed to be? Best moments are the ones that showcase the titular relationship.
