Ah yes.  I took my infant to Jurassic Park in 1992.  Looking back, that perhaps wasn't the best idea, but the baby was quiet (even if nothing else was) for two full hours.  That was nice.

Sandy's remarks on The Godfather got me thinking. We're a forum of mostly dudes, and I'm wondering how many of us prefer movies about mostly dudes. To what extent is your top 100 (or other number) a sausage party? That is, how many films among your favorites have no significant female roles? I'll leave it up to you to define "significant".

For me:

The Blues Brothers (one could argue that Aretha Franklin, Carrie Fisher and/or Kathleen Freeman are "significant" enough, but I'd say they're all borderline)
2001: A Space Odyssey
Aguirre: The Wrath of God (two characters that are mildly significant plotwise but have few lines)
Seven Samurai
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Apocalypse Now
High and Low
Devils on the Doorstep
A Man Escaped
Stalker
Wallace and Gromit in The Wrong Trousers

Which would make my list 11% sausage party. Slightly mitigated by three films with no significant male roles: Linda Linda Linda, Innocence and All About My Mother (if we count characters by their chosen gender).

My list:

Their Will Be Blood
2001: A Space Odyssey
Lawrence of Arabia
Seven Samurai
The Big Short
The Departed
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Kagemusha
Les Choristes
In Bruges
Pain & Gain
The Social Network

12 - Almost as few as Martin, surprisingly. My rules were mostly arbitrary. I haven't read Sandy's comments, but I count Michael's paramour in The Godfather as enough. Black Widow is in almost all of my favourite Avengers movies (plus Scarlet Witch, in some) and I choose to count that. There's a few movies with only minor roles for women, but I think by Martin's rules they don't make the cut.

The only theme I see here is that most of them are movies about very masculine worlds. Violence, for a lot of them, but also finance and coding. I'd say it is not unreasonable for them to not feature women more predominantly, and you could even argue TSN and The Departed shouldn't quite be on the list.

I don't think I have any symmetrical examples though.

The Thin Red Line
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Stalker
Apocalypse Now
M
Taste of Cherry
The Son
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Flowers of St. Francis
Silence
A Clockwork Orange
A Man Escaped
The Man Who Planted Trees

So 13 percent, which sounds about right.

I also wonder how much should be mitigated by films that are about only a character or two (A Man Escaped/The Man Who Planted Trees).

Is this still your top 100?

I think these 9 would maybe qualify?

12 Angry Men
In Bruges
1776
The Prestige
High Strung
Moonlight
The Matador
In The Heat of the Night
A Time For Burning

I could probably find an equal number where no men are prominent: Innocence, Water Lilies, CINECAST!ing Amal at a minimum. Probably Mustang and Clouds of Sils Maria.

33. I expected my list would be large.
I expected Crimson Tide to be the Most Dudest, forgetting about 12 Angry Men
The opposite end is represented by...
Mary Poppins
Erin Brockovich
Scream
The Silence of the Lambs
Dangerous Liaisons ?

The fulcrum would be Scenes From a Marriage

As Psycho is focused almost completely on Leigh's character for the first third to half the movie, I would definitely not include it.

I also would say that the character Irene Adler in Sherlock: A Scandal In Belgravia is a significant character.
