I know Silence of the Lambs was an early release. February 14 wide release in 1991.

Wow that's very early!

I wonder, has end-of-year stacking always been a thing, or was there an era when gaming the system for awards purposes became a trend. It's for sure been going on longer than I've been aware of it... but I feel like there was a time when it was not such an open secret.

City of God was released in Jan. 2003 and 12 months later was nominated for 4 Oscars. I took that as a sign of its quality.

Get Out was February of that year, right? Didn't win BP but did win OS.

Dante's Peak is one of the most amusing catastrophe films of the 90's. It is very good at making you laugh at inappropriate moments. Like when the Grandma jumps in the acid lake (but you kind of enjoy it because she was super annoying before hand), or this terrible (or great) use of a wilhelm scream. lol

I always preferred Volcano, which has a more knowing sense of humor as opposed to Peak's unintentionally funny moments. Tommy Lee Jones' deadpan style balances the campy "volcano-in-L.A." action, and director Mick Jackson can deliver genuinely thrilling scenes.

Yea, my memory of Volcano is that it's better as well. :)

Does anyone know of any January release films that have won Oscars? Or what the earliest in the year to be released film is that went on to win best picture? That sentence sucks and I don't know how to fix it. :))

Could be Black Panther if ASiB continues to rack up Ls, The Fav is deemed too out there, and if the Academy is too afraid to just toss it to Broma since it's not in English, is black and white, and doesn't have the wide appeal of Marvel. Also, it's a boring film.

I thought Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody were the frontrunners now...  ::)
