Having seen The Devils, the film Adele Haenel was in that Christophe Ruggia directed, that isn’t the most shocking revelation, though certainly a horrible one. The film’s nudity/sexuality featuring young actor/actress is certainly so scandalous by American standards as to have a presumption of abuse. Though Haenel is pretty great in it playing a child with autism, that’s about the only aspect that can be salvaged.

It would be comparable in a sense to Malle’s Pretty Baby, though Brooke Shields is pretty clear in her memoir that she did not encounter any issues in the filming and it was only the media environment around its release that caused emotional harms.

Polanski just won a César in absentia (Adapted Screenplay), the first he was up for. Jean-Pierre Darroussin seemed very uncomfortable announcing it.

On the bright side of things, lots of women winning, including Claire Mathon for Portrait (first win for the film so far), which I was really rooting for.

Joker being nominated for best foreign film is pretty funny.

Speaking of which, did Bong Joon-ho show up to collect his award? Or is he completely over it?

I don't know if he's over it, but he did not, though he did record a little thing with the cast. They seemed to have fun saying "Merci beaucoup".

He is going to need to buy a warehouse to hold all the awards he is getting.

Claire Denis is giving Best Director, which feels pointed given the context. She's doing it with Emmanuelle Bercot, one wonders if Despentes was asked to do it and refused ?

Now it'll be very, very awkward if Polanski wins... it's a tough one to predict, Sciamma and Ly could take it, but Ozon never won and a César in 16 nominations, so...

Aaaaand Polanski wins. Did not expect that.
