I enjoyed Four Lions and did not know about The Day Shall Come. However it is on Hulu at the moment, so it may be watched shortly.
Cool. Let us know your thoughts if you get a chance! :)

Ok, I have watched it. I am about to lose my paid Hulu account so it hurried me on a lot.

The Day Shall Come was ok. There are elements of the black comedy of Armando Iannucci films, although in no way as funny. It also has a similar feel to Four Lions. It is very much commenting on sting operations, in particular those which seem to encourage illegal behaviour. I am feeling a bit low after watching the film, because there is a believability to the situation, and it is not something I would like to think would not occur.

This lowness I am feeling provides some evidence that it is a better than ok film.

Thanks for pointing out it's existance.

Hmm interesting. I'd hoped maybe you'd find a gem there, but at least it wasn't a bust. :)

PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK and Ozu's THERE WAS A FATHER make a great "school loses student; teacher has a breakdown" double feature as I inadvertently found out last night

No, I just stumbled across the title someplace. I guess probably looking for things to stream is where I saw it.

I've always meant to watch that Ozu. Some day ....

Has anyone seen the new-ish Picnic at Hanging Rock mini-series?

If this has been discussed recently and has been posted elsewhere, please redirect me:

Who do you think are the best directors right now, those whose works will endure? I'm trying to put together a list of directors from whom I've missed films or have just overlooked.

A handful from whom that I've seen nearly everything or everything readily available:
Bong (need Memories of a Murder)
Wes Anderson
Sean Baker
Debra Granik
Sofia Coppola

Ones with holes:
Nolan (The Prestige and Insomnia)
Villeneuve (Prisoners and a few of the lesser-seen films)
Jafar Panahi (This Is Not a Film and The Mirror)
Andrea Arnold (Wuthering Heights)

Ones I have just missed out on for whatever reason:
Kelly Reichardt
Chloe Zhao (I know there's only two, but I want to revisit The Rider and see Songs My Brother Taught me in preparation for Nomadland and, believe it or not, The Eternals)
Aaaand...now please help me fill this in with contemporary auteurs I am overlooking...

A witty saying proves nothing. - Voltaire

I did projects on this in 2008 and 2015. In the more recent one I didn't filter out retired directors, but you can look through those results and get a pretty accurate list.

Modern names given threads since the 2015 list that should be considered:
Damien Chazelle
Yorgos Lanthimos
Taika Waititi
Ryan Coogler
Celine Sciamma
Marielle Heller
Mike Flanagan

I feel like we had a whole big discussion of the best directors of the 2010s but I can't remember where. Pretty sure Sean Baker and Greta Gerwig were my top two.

Korine, Hosoda, have to think of others.
