Retro Filmspots IV: Year Selection
« on: January 02, 2017, 02:00:50 AM »
Alright, it's official. We'll do 1974 first; then 1999; then something from the 1930s.

This above post was only binding for three years, and, alas, it's been a full four.

I personally still love the idea of doing a year from the 1930s (or 1940s) next, but only if it's not going to significantly dampen participation.

So what do you all think? Are there particular years or even just decades that you'd especially like to focus on? Conversely, is there a range of years you'd have trouble mustering an interest in?

(I wouldn't expect the next Retrospots to really kick into gear until March, at the very earliest, but I think it'd be good to choose the year sooner than later.)

I'm game for anything, 30's (or even 20's) included. We should probably avoid the 90's, 70's and 50's for the sake of variety right ?

Looking at the 80s.

1980 has an interesting battle between Raging Bull, The Shining and The Empire Strikes Back
1982 has Fitzcarraldo, Blade Runner and Fanny & Alexander
1983 has an interesting Deathmatch between The Right Stuff and Videodrome
1985 has Back to the Future, but also Ran and Brazil
1986, has Blue Velvet and Aliens
1989 is my personal choice with Batman, Born on the Fourth of July, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Dead Poets Society, Do the Right Thing, Drugstore Cowboy, Field of Dreams, Glory, Henry V, My Left Foot, Parenthood, Say Anything..., Sex Lies and Videotape, The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover, The Killer and When Harry Met Sally

but 1987...
Au Revoir Les Enfants
Broadcast News
The Dead
Full Metal Jacket
House of Games
The Last Emperor
Lethal Weapon 2
Near Dark
Predator
The Princess Bride
Radio Days
Raising Arizona
Robocop
The Untouchables
Wall Street
Wings of Desire
Withnail & I

My reluctance with the 1980s is that I'm hoping to wrap up the 80s US Bracket at some point this year, and the overlap doesn't appeal to me.

1982 would probably be my own pick, though, at first glance. Then again, I wonder if a year like 1983 — where there are no dominant favorites — would be more interesting, especially as a change of pace to the previous three Retrospots.

I found myself eager to participate in 1957 and 1974. 1999 not so much. Can't particularly put my finger on why. I guess if the filmspots are going to time travel I'm more interested in somewhere I've never been?

Id vote for a random draw for a year between 1930 and 1950.

I'd go for 1930s.
If you want a stacked year pick 1939
The Rules of the Game, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, Stagecoach, Ninotchka, Only Angels Have Wings, Le Jour se lève, The Story of the Late Chrysanthemums, Goodbye Mr. Chips, Midnight, and more.

1938, 1937 and 1936 have some strong selections too. Of the earlier years I'd only recommend 1933 for a competitive selection.

I don't get my set of films by women directors in the 1910s and 20s or by African-American directors in the 40s and 50s until like November. So any retrospot effort will feel incomplete until then.

1939 is certainly the Holy Grail if you think we can get enough interest in films that are so old.

I fear 39 will be too much like 99, where a few high-profile titles dominate the nominations/votes.
