Top 10 Movies of 2016
« on: January 05, 2017, 07:29:37 AM »
I don't think this thread's been started yet. With the filmspots rapidly approaching it's time to share our favourites of the year and call each other out on our collective disastrous tastes.

I will refrain from posting my ranking before I have at least watched La La Land, so I leave the honour of going first to whoever will prove most industrious and awake.

  • O.J.: Made in America
  • Manchester By the Sea
  • Arrival
  • Sing Street
  • The Handmaiden
  • Moonlight
  • Hell or High Water
  • Toni Erdmann
  • La La Land
  • Everybody Wants Some!!

Plus loads of honorable mentions. I could probably comfortably list a Top 50 and feel good about it from this year. Great year for movies.

I have two lists. One is for movies released in 2016 in France, and that one is basically definitive.

1. Room (Lenny Abrahamson)
2. Spotlight (Tom McCarthy)
3. Nocturama (Bertrand Bonello)
4. The Hateful Eight (Quentin Tarantino)
5. Les ogres (Léa Fehner)
6. Everybody Wants Some!! (Richard Linklater)
7. Ah-ga-ssi / The Handmaiden (Park Chan-wook)
8. Arrival (Denis Villeneuve)
9. Elle (Paul Verhoeven)
10. Creed (Ryan Coogler)

Full Letterbox'd list

And then there's the "2016 as according to IMDB" list, which is of course a work in progress, and will continue to be for the next four to six months at least.

1. Nocturama (Bertrand Bonello)
2. Jackie (Pablo Larrain)
3. La La Land (Damien Chazelle)
4. Everybody Wants Some!! (Richard Linklater)
5. Ah-ga-ssi / The Handmaiden (Park Chan-wook)
6. Arrival (Denis Villeneuve)
7. Elle (Paul Verhoeven)
8. 10 Cloverfield Lane (Dan Trachtenberg)
9. Moana (John Musker & Ron Clements)
10. Paterson (Jim Jarmusch)

From what I can tell, I saw 31 films from 2016.. the top 10 all that I like

The Handmaiden
The Witch
Victoria
The Lobster
Green Room
Nocturnal Animals
O.J.: Made in America
Arrival
Hail, Caesar!

From the rest, I liked these ok

The Nice Guys

The Jungle Book
The Girl on the Train
Deadpool

And really had little feeling to hatred for these:
Zootopia
Midnight Special
London Has Fallen
Captain America: Civil War
The Neon Demon
Now You See Me 2
Independence Day: Resurgence
The Shallows
The Purge: Election Year
Star Trek Beyond
Lights Out
Nerve
War Dogs
Doctor Strange
Silence

5.       Love and Friendship
6.       SPL 2: A Time for Consequences
7.       Our Little Sister

I am getting more and more annoyed that I probably won't be able to get to Certain Women before February. At least not in a theatre. Can you all pretend to like it less so I won't be as irritated about it?

The Handmaiden
The Witch
Victoria
The Lobster
Green Room
Nocturnal Animals
O.J.: Made in America
Arrival
Hail, Caesar!
Cloverfield Lane

That's pretty solid or someone who has only watched 30 movies this year. Deadpool is better than at least half of those though.

And really had little feeling to hatred for these:
Zootopia
Civil War
Doctor Strange

You place Sully and the Girl on the Train above these three wonderful movies? Your lack of curry is affecting you more than I thought.

Sing Street
(...)
Our Little Sister

Bit of a cheat but I'll allow it. I will put Audrie and Daisy on my watchlist to round up the docs for the year. I would like to be able to submit a full ballot his time around.

I'm having curry withdrawal, I have tried it twice and it seems to have the consistency of gravy.  I think they are putting flower in it.

I did like Deadpool quite a bit, I didn't list those in any order other than how I found and cut and paste them.  I would put it at 11 or possibly swap it out for Hail, Caesar! now that I think about it.  My Coen bias is probably making me want to like it more than I actually did given I only have watched it once.  I suppose I am unsure of Nocturnal Animals as well until I watch it again.

I am probably too hard on Civil War and Doctor Strange by putting them with a butch of films I hated like Purge, ID, London has Fallen, Now you see me 2, etc  Those were all things I watched on flights while trying to knock myself out with a few glasses of wine.
