Somewhere between "regularly" and "every so often". I go with friends (anywhere from 4-6 people) to see all the blockbusters, we usually go out for food before and drinks after on a Friday or Saturday. Usually for the more independent/dramatic films (which often aren't playing close to me in the first place), I'll go by myself early on a weekend and sometimes a friend might be interested. It's a combination of how far I want to travel/how much I want to spend, how busy my weekend is, etc. For smaller films it's so much easier to just wait a few months and rent the movie via on demand like I did for Hell or High Water (although I did remember seeing that one get a wider release).
Like it is for a lot of people, ticket and concession costs turns me off. For me it costs a lot to go the theater. When I lived in NYC, a ticket was $15, now that I moved upstate a bit, it's closer to $11 for a new release (usually about a whole whopping $1.00 less if it's been out for over a week) and small popcorn and a soda is about another $10, but I tend not to do that unless my girlfriend and I are out on a movie date and oddly this year, that's been for a film I've already seen/am going again to see with my friends like Captain America or Fantastic Beasts.
