Retro Filmspots 1945: Personal Ballots
« on: January 19, 2017, 03:13:08 PM »
A place to track your nominees as they change over the course of this project. I'll use the preliminary results to generate the FYC threads and also as a point of comparison with the final ballots, so we can see how the discovery project shaped our choices.

Here's a template you can use to separate your post into three columns, to make each post and the thread as a whole less unwieldy.

If we can all make an effort to get our preliminary ballots updated by the end of the weekend (either posted here or messaged to me), I'll put together the master FYC threads and the discovery project watchlist.

I'm probably going to color-code my personal ballot, with black representing choices where I'm going off memory, blue representing choices from new discoveries, and green representing choices there were confirmed by rewatch.

I was just thinking about this the other day. Here's something:
Note: There are way too many good lead actress performances. I'm missing Gene Tierney and Joan Crawford. One of my Fallen Angel nominations may be supporting, but I can't remember. Nina Foch may get bumped too. I'm sure there are other worthy supporting actors, but I don't remember and didn't note any of them. Same with Editing which is really hard to judge from memory. Except for the music categories and maybe short film I expect to have a full ballot by the end.

Feel free to list Hangover Square and others under Hidden Gem as well. That's the reason for ten slots, so that if one of your choices gets nominated in another major category (like Best Picture), it'll fall out of your Hidden Gem votes and everything else will move up.

I suspect that my 4 or 5 of Best Picture choices will overlap with my Hidden Gem choices.

I'll nominate Hangover Square for Score on your behalf.

Yeah, I forgot what we decided was the criteria for Hidden Gem. I'll fill that out later.

Unfortunately, I'm relying on my reviews for most of these since the memories have faded. I rarely comment on Editing and Sound in my reviews, so those categories are going to require some thought (or revisits, which I'm not likely to do).

For Hidden Gems, I just went with my top rated films, ignoring a couple (like Mildred Pierce) that were tough to call "hidden".

"Ensemble Cast" is one I struggle with. Does it mean when I think the entire cast is good? Does it only apply to large casts? Is it more about how the actors play off each other rather than evaluating their performances in isolation?

I'm going to keep my Ballot for this on my computer. I sent you a PM list already and am prepping to send you some corrections (or would you prefer I just PM a complete revised list?)

I used the list here, which would make some of your top choices ineligible: http://www.filmspotting.net/forum/index.php?topic=14229.msg860791#msg860791
