I see my "you never know, maybe someone else will vote for this too" picks to fill out some categories have mostly not worked out.

Everyone now and then, it'll work out ... but in general the Filmspots, like any awards race, is heavily dependent on promotion (for better or worse).

The following films only appeared only a handful of ballots, but without enough concentrated support to merit inclusion in the countdown:

April and the Extraordinary World (3)
The BFG (3)
Keanu (3)
Sully (3)
Hidden Figures (4)
Things to Come (4)
X-Men: Apocalypse (5)

It'll be interesting if Hidden Figures be make any kind of impact next year, or it'll fall victim to a release date that has it straddling two calendar years. For 2016, it received votes for Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Ensemble, Actress (Taraji P. Henson), Supporting Actress (Janelle Monae), Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer), Supporting Actor (Kevin Costner), and Surprise.

Things to Come will also be re-eligible, so if Isabelle Huppert falls short with Elle this year, she'll have another shot at Filmspot glory next year.

I thought Sausage Party might get a vote or two in the Score category, but it wasn't represented there at all.

Too many amazing scores this year.

Aw, I was really rooting for Gleason, both here and in the Oscar nominations. I wish I'd thought earlier to promote it as a candidate for Surprise, where it was more competitive than in the crowded Documentary race.

Gleason was one of, if not the, most emotionally powerful cinematic experiences of the year for me. Glad I caught up with it, even if it was late in the process.

Apologies to Michael Shannon if he's as good as Oscar voters seem to say; I just couldn't muster up the enthusiasm to catch up with this one.

Michael Shannon is great in this, but I think I disliked the film enough to not even really think about it when considering my nominees.
