Filmspots 2017: Eligibility Questions
« on: January 27, 2017, 06:42:29 PM »
As outlined in the FAQ, films are eligible up to a three-year period, starting with their first theatrical release, but with five limiting factors. Films are no longer eligible in subsequent years after any of the following occur:

1) The film gains a wide theatrical release in the US (playing simultaneously on more than 100 or so screens).

2) The film debuts on DVD in the US.

3) The film earns a Filmspot nomination.

4) The film is a made-for-tv film and airs on US television.

5) The film's US rights are exclusively owned by a streaming service (such as Netflix) and the film premieres on that service.

(See here for the origin of these guidelines.)

I'll keep track of films with questionable eligibility below.

I think I'd love how awkward it'd be, or how awkward it should be.

If you see any films listed as eligible that don't seem like they should be, please let me know.

I don't know if these titles will have any increased availability in 2017:

Angry Inuk
The Bad Batch
Citizen Jane: Battle for the City
Courted
HyperNormalisation
Ice and the Sky
Listen to Me Marlon
Love
The Lure
Maliglutit
One Man and His Cow
Paris 05:59: Theo + Hugo Now in theaters!
Right Now, Wrong Then
Sairat
Seasons
Secret Path
Sleeping Giant
Sonita
Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe
(T)error
Tschick
Visaaranai

The rest look to be coming to US theaters or DVD during the year.

One other note:

One More Time with Feeling probably played at 100+ US theaters in 2016, but it was a 'one night only' event, so I didn't let that affect its eligibility.

I'm assuming there's a "don't" missing in there ?

If you see any films listed as eligible that don't seem like they should be, please let me know.

I don't know if these titles will have any increased availability in 2017:

Angry Inuk (it's National Film Board of Canada, so it should be a streaming rental on their website this year)
The Bad Batch (Netflix has streaming rights, but they might still be shopping it for theatrical release)
Citizen Jane: Battle for the City (has screenings scheduled in Feb (Calgary) and March (Brooklyn), but no theatrical release)
Maliglutit (will be streaming on IsumaTV; currently in theatre in Toronto)
Secret Path (not a theatrical release; can be streamed on CBC)
Sleeping Giant (available on DVD)
