Best Studio Ghibli Movies
« on: February 17, 2017, 06:19:04 AM »
After watching Your Name this week I found myself thinking about all the anime I needed to watch, which naturally brought me to Isao Takahata and his still mostly unexplored filmography. To keep with my previous animated studios polls I decided to turn this into a Studio Ghibli poll, even if some people will call it a Miyazaki v Takahata showdown. Some movies, sadly, need to be excluded, like Nausicäa.

Once I'm done with the Filmspotting Marathons (so... not now), I should probably do a Ghibli marathon, because I really should have seen more, given how much I like the ones I've seen.

Tonari no Totoro / My Neighbour Totoro
Mononoke-hime / Princess Mononoke
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi / Spirited Away
Hotaru no haka / Grave of the Fireflies
Tenkū no shiro Rapyuta / Castle in the Sky
Hauru no ugoku shiro / Howl's Moving Castle
La tortue rouge / The Red Turtle

Really ? It seems pretty normal to me... including it would be like including Jurassic Park in a poll about Dreamworks, right ?

I don't know enough about Dreamworks to comment on that. But Nausicaa is basically the film that started Ghibli, and it's a Ghibli film in spirit. It's got the involvement of Takahata, Miyazaki and Hisaishi. It was produced under the same studio that was Ghibli's parent company for 20 years. It's like if The Beatles had made an album as The Quarrymen, I would count it among the Beatles albums. It's just a technicality, splitting hairs. Heck, even the Studio Ghibli fan page is nausicaa.net

I use the Jurassic Park example because it's the film that gave Spielberg the money to start DreamWorks... now admittedly it's not as clear cut as Nausicaa because Spielberg had a whole career before that, but there's a parallel there.

I guess I don't see it as nitpicking to say that Nausicaa is not a Ghibli film because Ghibli didn't exist when Nausicaa was made... Should we count Miyazaki's Lupin film as well ? A technicality it might be, but... I don't know, it would seem pretty nonsensical for me to include a film that was not made by studio Ghibli in a poll about films made by studio Ghibli.

Naussica not being included makes sense to me.

Fair enough, I'm clearly in the minority! To me, the spirit of a question like this is "which are your favorites by this group of artists working in a certain idiom?" more than "which are your favorites that have this logo on them?" but that's just my perspective. Feel free to mentally scratch out Nausicaa when looking at my list. It is at #13 on my list, so just treat it like one of those elevators that have no 13th floor.
