I was on the "of course it should" side. But then again, I'm someone who pronounces Ghibli with a hard g.

5. When Marnie was There

Didn't know anyone like that one quite as much. Did you write a review for one of your marathons?

To clarify for everyone else who may be horrified that this shows as my #1, it's my #5, I just used the forum's listing feature lol.

And yes, here is a link: review

I'll edit that to avoid future confusions.

I am unable to pinpoint why you liked the movie so much. You mention what you liked, such as the bookends and the themes of nostalgia and family, but not what, in their treatment, elicited such enthusiasm from you.

Re-reading my own review, and reliving the experience in my head, I would say the nostalgic reflections are what I connected with so much. The experience of not just this film on the big screen, but the series itself certainly adds to this sentiment. I watched one Ghibli film a week, every week, on the big screen, and this was the film that capped that. With the film itself being about friendship and nostalgia, I think I was just overwhelmed by the emotions of the series, and it served as a perfect ending for me. I don't mean to say I think less of the film now. I don't. But rather that When Marnie was There served as the nostalgic reminder of the great friendship I had developed with Ghibli over the few months the series ran. It was a once in a lifetime experience, and that takes nothing away from the films themselves, but merely enhances them. Now every time I revisit one of these films, I will be reminded of this unique experience, and appreciate the films that much more, Marnie included.

It's much like my experience with Fritz Lang's Metropolis, which I watched in an uncomfortable classroom setting while in college. What made that experience so memorable, lasting, and unique was the live, industrial style music score performed by a DJ there. I haven't seen the film since, but I know I will never be able to separate that experience from that movie. The same with Marnie, and all of the Ghibli films I saw during the series. The difference with Marnie was that it was the final film in the series, and was about nostalgia. A double whammy.

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (A+)

Three I haven't seen yet. Will probably splurge on the blu-rays soon.
