The Most influential Film of a decade

So what do you think is the most influential film for each decade of film? Remember it may not have been influential in its day, but later would be very influential. Yes this will be like picking between your favourite films, how can you just pick one? Still I expect that there will be lots of 'Adam' moves to expand upon that number.

1920s

Damn this is hard is it Battleship Potemkin (1925) or Metropolis (1927)? With my science fiction leanings, I am going to go for Metropolis.

Haven't seen BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN, but the montage work is supposed to be excellent. METROPOLIS is such a great movie, the idea of the great city with the wealthy on top, the poor in the depths, and only a moderate can unite them.  Watching BLADE RUNNER recently reminded me a lot of METROPOLIS

THE GENERAL for its sense of scale, the quality of its stunt work, the innovative use of special effects, and setting the standard for comedy for years to come.

It's very tough to pick. When I think of something that feels influential, I also think of what influenced IT, which kind of makes me second guess where the true influence lies.

I had thought that whatever film started the superhero trend would be a good candidate for most influential of the 00's but it's hard to pinpoint a genre defining film. And then you can also go back further...

Gonna throw out a curveball, perhaps, with Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages. There's a lot of modern docs that come out of this film with its various styles and recreations and, well, there's the insertion of the director into the movie to boot!

For the superhero genre it would have to be either the first X-Men, the original Spider-Man or Iron Man. The first two proved it was possible to make a genuinely good superhero movie that was not camp and Iron Man initiated the Marvel recipe of doing things.

Surely Citizen Kane would have to be the pick for its decade. The...thirties?

Surely The Dark Knight would be the pick for the 00s ? We still are in a constant cycle of blockbusters following it or reacting to it, for better or worse.

Do you mean the whole dark and gritty trend? Did that trilogy set that off? If it did, is that the most important thing in that decade?

Or perhaps you mean something else?

Avatar kicked off the whole 3D thing which is certainly influencing the industry regardless of your feelings about it, and more widely than just superhero movies.

Influential is such a hard term to get a grasp on, especially when comparing different movies.

For example, are those silents from the 20s really more influential than The Jazz Singer? It's not just the use of sound itself, the structure of silent films is different than sound films and while it's very rough around the edges and would be refined a lot in the coming 5 years, it set a template to build on. The silents are certainly much better and important and interesting and watchable films, but influential?
