Best Breakup Films?
« on: March 01, 2017, 11:32:05 PM »
Hi,

I know I don't really post here, but I'm a long time listener and I lurk on this board from time to time.

Anyway, my friend (who is across the country) is going through a devastating breakup and I want to send her a care package of films to help her get through it.

These could be films that cheer her up, or maybe so sad that they help her relate. I'm open to any ideas.

I thank you in advance for any help, and I hope to god I'm posting this in the right place.

THIS LIST IS ASSUMING THAT SHE IS HETEROSEXUAL OR BROKE UP WITH A DUDE:

---

(500) Days of Summer - Quintessential Break-Up Movie of the 2000s

Swingers - Quintessential Break-Up Movie of the 1990s

Bright Star - Because Ben Whishaw and poetry and sadness

When Harry Met Sally - Maybe she's not realizing she has some awesome friends in her life!

Lost in Translation - One of the best films about alienation that people go through when in difficult relationships

Paris, Je T'aime - ALL THE FEELINGS OF LOVE

The Lady Eve - Feminist revenge comedy. Stanwyck!

Bridesmaids - Friendship! Women bonding! Men suck!

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
High Fidelity
The First Wives Club
Broadcast News
An Unmarried Woman
My Best Friend's Wedding
Before Sunrise

So, a kick her while she's down type of situation? I've been there.

Movies not mentioned:
Chasing Amy
Punch-Drunk Love
Garden State
Chicago
Young Girls of Rochefort
The Martian
Three Colours: Blue
La La Land

Heavily Second:
500 Days of Summer
High Fidelity

Super miserable:
Blue Valentine

Something to cheer her up:
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
When Harry Met Sally
500 Days of Summer (maybe works for the first category as well, kind of a mix)

That's all I have time to do atm. Maybe I'll have more time later.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

It sounds like 500 Days of Summer is a must. I've seen it before, but I can't remember how it ends.

Also, Saltine, I think Broadcast News is the best one I would have never ever thought of...but it is so perfect!
