Europe is currently holding strongest with these major filmmakers:
Angela Schanelec: Marseille; Passing Summer; Places in Cities
Mia Hansen-Løve: Goodbye First Love; Eden; Things to Come
Claire Denis: The Intruder; Beau Travail; Nenette and Boni
Maren Ade: Everyone Else, Toni Erdmann
Jessica Hausner: Lourdes; Amour Fou; House

Other favorites:
Lucrecia Martel: La Ciénaga; The Headless Woman; The Holy Girl
Kira Muratova: Passions; The Asthenic Syndrome
Maria Speth: The Days Between; Madonnas
Athina Rachel Tsangari: Chevalier; Attenberg

Want to see more by Wertmuller and Zetterling.

There are quite a few independent American female filmmakers, but I haven't investigated enough...

This is tough to narrow down. In no particular order, these films have drawn me to multiple viewings. You may call them favorites if you wish:

Children of a Lesser God (1986), Randa Haines (I watch this at least once every 2 years)
The Punk Singer (2013--Documentary), Sini Anderson
Zero Dark Thirty (2012), Kathryn Bigelow
Wayne's World (1992), Penelope Spheeris
Winter's Bone (2010), Debra Granik
Brave (2012), Brenda Chapman (Note: she co-directed, but I'm counting it--seen this movie 20 times--I have a 6-year-old daughter ;D )
Big (1988), Penny Marshall
Citizenfour (2014--Documentary), Laura Poitras
Selma (2014), Ava DuVernay
Little Miss Sunshine (2006), Valerie Faris (Note: she co-directed)

For your consideration:

Top of the Lake (2013), Jane Campion (This was a 'series' that I watched through twice--many felt it was slow, but I saw it as a 'slow' build)

Edit: corrected "Citizenfour" into a single word. Was split into 2 via autocorrect.

There are nine films in my Top 100 that are directed by women:

Trouble Every Day (Claire Denis)
Daisies (Vera Chytilová)
The Piano (Jane Campion)
The Adventures Of Prince Achmed (Lotte Reiniger)
Vagabond (Agnès Varda)
Meshes Of The Afternoon (Maya Deren)
Araya (Margot Benacerraf)
Wendy And Lucy (Kelly Reichardt)
Amour fou (Jessica Hausner)

Not an impressive number but not a disgrace either.
Extraordinary (81-100˚) | Very good (61-80˚) | Good (41-60˚) | Fair (21-40˚) | Poor (0-20˚)

Haven't heard of the bolded before! Where should I start with those four?

Marseille is the most formally daring that I have seen from Schanelec(haven't seen the latest), but it's also one of the GOATs. So, either start there if you're willing to dive straight in, or any other film is plenty good to get a sense of her approach to drama (even if Afternoon is more "dramatic", owing to the Chekhov).
Hausner is very distinct, and can be love/hate; maybe pick Lourdes if religion interests you, or not if it doesn't!
Muratova starts with very naturalistic films and then... ends that style. Her later films are more interesting, and more likely to be offputting. I love Passions, and I love it especially because it makes no sense and had no stakes and nothing happens. And I want to emphasize how little anything makes sense. It's beautiful. Most people probably hate it.
Speth is easy: Start with The Days Between! It's so great.

Jessica Hausner: Amour Fou is very austere and stern. It ran ashore on my Top 100. Lourdes is also very good.

Maria Speth: +1 on The Days Between.

Which of Mai Zetterling have you seen?

Just The Girls this far, but it had so many intriguing elements and textures. I've read some less-than-kind things about her other films, but I never trust other people when it comes to comes to comedy. Especially arthouse comedy. Especially especially arthouse feminist comedy.

I've seen The Girls and Loving Couples. The Girls felt incredibly heavy-handed and half-baked to me. Loving Couples isn't great, but I enjoyed it quite a bit more, probably because it felt a lot more like Bergman.

I'm too selective about what I go to see, and I am a Big Fan of Hollywood Mystery Movies. And My favorite movie women movie directer is  "Kathy Cotter"

And I love her to amazing movies "Fatal Secret" and 'Restitution Road"
