I think it was deliberately done to satisfy this expectation because it doesn't make logical sense. Cut in half? fine, but why would there be an extra cut that removes one arm from the rest of the body? I think it's a detail meant to be noticed on rewatches, like the footprints on the planet.

Correction, I found the explanation and apparently if you're looking for it, you do clearly see when Kylo calls the lit saber forward to him how it separates the arm from the body.
