Top Five Outlandish Movies
« on: May 16, 2017, 12:54:05 PM »
I'm thinking of "outlandish" as something that is weird and extreme.  House is the first one I think of for this list.  It is in your face, and crazy and unforgettable.  And good, but we can think of other ones that are just as good.

BTW, you don't have to stick to Japanese film.

Could you be more specific? Are we talking about premises that challenge our understanding of physics or human nature? Do the characters in the movies make choices the viewer cannot believe? Is it about tone?

My approach is movies that blow our minds, that are so crazy that they could be horrible, but somehow they seem to work (for us).  I tend to lean in my thinking toward movies that keep throwing crazy things at us, and don't really stop.

I haven't completed my top five, but some that I am considering:

The Happiness of the Katakuris
Eraserhead
Brazil
Spirited Away
Tideland
A Page of Madness
The Shining
Life of Pi
A Serious Man
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The Lego Movie
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs

Got it?

A couple that works for me but I don't believe they get mentioned at all:

The Dark Backward was one of my favorite movies in college, but when I rewatched it 10 years ago, I really hated it.

Even as a cult film wannabe, it's terrible. Repo! The Genetic Opera is preferable on the same type of low expectations.

Well, I hadn't seen it since the 90's so my experience may be similar to MT but you can find it easy enough to give it a try
