Best Monte Cristo Movie
« on: May 18, 2017, 11:40:00 AM »
I used to love the 2002 version as a kid. Then I read the book and I started hating the 2002 version. Then I watched the 2002 version and kept on hating it, because it's not a good movie. Then I watched Gerard Depardieu and thought « Why did they let Gerard Depardieu act in things? ». Then I watched Richard Chamberlain doing his thing of starring in period pieces, and it was okay I guess, but not great, you know what I mean? Some years later I watched a sci-fi anime version of the story, with vampires and giant knight robots, but that doesn't go into the poll, so who cares.

The Count of Monte Cristo (1975)
The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)
Le Comte de Monte Cristo (1998)

Haven't seen any, except a few snippets I caught of 2002 version when my first wife was watching it.

Then I watched Gerard Depardieu and thought « Why did they let Gerard Depardieu act in things? ».

Wait, what ? Acting is the one and only thing he should be doing.

La dernière femme, Mon Oncle d'Amerique, Jean de Florette... Depardieu is great.

I don't actually have anything against the man, I was just annoyed that he was cast in that particular role, because if there is one thing he doesn't look like it is someone who has spent 14 years in prison surviving on gruel and brazen rats and adhering to a strict exercise regime.

I don't think I have ever watched him in one of his more lauded performances.

I've only seen the 1975 version, and I loved it.  In the 70s.  Haven't seen it since.
