The Top 100 Club (Episode III)
« on: June 01, 2017, 02:12:35 AM »
"What joy to share your favorite things with people who will do their best to appreciate them." -pixote

Hey folks!  It's time to play your favorite part of the forum, The Top 100 Club!

Here are the rules:

1. Have a list. It should have at least 50, and no more than 300. It need not be ranked or a true top films list. Just some list of films you want people to pick from when your month is featured. Please post a link to your list (to another post on the forum or to an external website) in this thread or PM it to me (oldkid) when you join or if you want to change the list you are linked to and I will keep track below.

2. The order of the first rotation was randomly determined.  New joiners will be placed at the end of the current round. Once you have your turn in a round, you are added to the list for the next round.

3. When your top 100 is up in the rotation, every other participant must watch and review a film from your top list that they haven't seen before, and they must do so within a month.  Participants are free to choose whatever film they want -- or if you prefer, you can ask for a dictation -- but it should be something new to you.  Make it a movie you've always wanted to see, or one you've never heard of, or one you've been avoiding for some reason.

4. If a participant does not post a review within the allotted month, his or her top 100 list gets knocked down one spot in the rotation.  If you miss three reviews in a row, you are taken out of the rotation entirely and must participate again (by watching and reviewing) before you are allowed back in.

5. Be respectful.  You can write a scathing, negative review, but please don't denigrate someone else's tastes while doing it.

I want to thank Bondo for hosting us for the last couple years, he did a great job!  And, of course, I want to thank Martin, the founder of the Top 100 Club, for giving us a great opportunity to share our movies with each other!

This month we've got chardy999!

Lots of excellent cinema there to choose from!

Only two unseen from chardy's list. I am going to try to get to both French Kiss (though Netflix has it as a Very Long Wait  :-\) and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (which I'm buried on the wait list for at the library).

Failing that I'll try for a rewatch. Shame falls in the category of a film competitive for my own top-100 but only seen once or perhaps a second viewing of Ex Machina is in order.

This thread should be titled « Return of the Club ».

That is all.

Who knows what would have happened had oldkid not been selected? Everyone was talking about how he might not accept the results.

Yes, thank you to all the leaders of this wonderful club. I wish I had got to more for Teproc!

I did a more recent Top 100 end of last year which may give people more to choose from:

https://letterboxd.com/chardy999/list/chardys-top-100-2016/

I'd guess there are perhaps 20 new ones there. Since that was posted you can add The Handmaiden and the Oasis doco Supersonic if you so please.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.

Unseen:
84. Ida
83. Curfew
70. 35 Shots of Rum
65. Larry Flynt: The Right to Be Left Alone
64. The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans
63. The Square

Will watch Curfew in a few days (it's a short, right?) but can't watch any of the others until the end of the month. Will certainly watch Ida, though, and hopefully another.

Edit: Will probably use the new list actually:
Mustang
Winter Sleep
Youth
El hijo de la novia
Toni Erdmann
Pride & Prejudice

All sound interesting.
