Moving Pictures: Top Five Films In (or on) Vehicles
« on: June 14, 2017, 03:32:34 PM »
Planes, trains, automobiles, motorcycles or tractors:  What are your favorite films that take place mostly in or on a vehicle?

My choices:

Mad Max: Fury Road
Locke
The Mirror (1997)
Castle in the Sky
The General
United 93
Airplane!
Snowpiercer

10. Gray Lady Down
9. Juggernaut
8. Sunshine
7. Das Boot
6. The Hitch-Hiker
5. Alamar
4. Captains Courageous
3. The General
2. Two-Lane Blacktop
1. Mad Max: Fury Road

Not a complete list, just the first ten to come to mind. I tried to stick to movies where the majority of the story takes place of the vehicle, which ruled out options like United 93, Wild Boys of the Road, Jaws, and Fitzcarraldo (Two-Lane Blacktop might be a stretch in that regard). I left off a couple more that I need to revisit (Stagecoach, The Hunt for Red October, Speed, etc.). Ships/submarines could probably be a completely separate list, as with spaceships.

edit: Knife in the Water probably belongs on there somewhere, possibly along with Death Proof, Night Train to Munich, The Train, and Gravity.

It seems that most of United 93 took place on the airplane, but my memory could be faulty.  I love the choices Captains Courageous and Sunshine-- I didn't think of those.

Feel like I shouldn't respond until I've seen Baby Driver.

1. United 93
2. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
3. Airplane!
4. Crimson Tide
5. Operation Petticoat
6. Captains Courageous
7. The Road Warrior
8. Knife in the Water
9. Snowpiercer
10. Dead Calm

That last slot could just as easily be Speed.

Other Honorable Mentions:
Sherlock Holmes and the Terror by Night: one of the best of the Basil Rathbone/Sherlock Holmes series
Murder on the Orient Express: obviously I haven't seen the new one. The 1974 film was my entry into Agatha Christie, but I also like the interesting direction taken by the Poirot TV show, which is much more train-centric

Stretching the scope a bit more:
The Blues Brothers
Thelma & Louise

Not to be overlooked:
All Is Lost
Moana
Ten
The River Wild
Titanic
Top Gun
Yellow Submarine

I see pixote listed Sunshine, which is interesting to consider. It means I could include Alien and others could list 2001, but something about Spaceships make it too big of an eco system to be considered. If you're going to go there, you might as well say Earth is a vehicle on a massive scale.

I'm surprised you didn't also put A Taste of Cherry-- isn't that a favorite of yours?

I did. It's good, but it probably wouldn't make a top 10 list if I were to compile one. Top 20 maybe.
