I am totally not doing this to sell the poll results to a production company.

I sometimes watch the special features, usually when there's some great content or when I love the movie.

There are often one or two short films on animated disk, I will usually watch those, or the deleted scenes for movies.

The only times I have ever really watched special features was when I was running through my catalog here (which I eventually wish to continue). I loved doing it and seeing all the extra information, or like Dave said the short films or documentaries that were included on some of the discs. Really adds value to them I think.

First starting out, I would watch everything, listen to commentaries, the whole nine yards. But once I got into college, I prioritized seeing as many films as possible and I've never gotten past that mentality. If I wrote about a film, I would often watch the special features and listen to the commentary. Now, I barely ever watch them, which is rather sad. I've had the Blade Runner copy on my desk with the intentions of watching the special features for months now, but I always end up watching something new instead.

So you've been a film nerd since high school? Cool.

For discs I own, I've watched almost all of the special features. If it's a disc from the library, I usually don't bother... unless of course I liked the movie enough to eventually buy it, at which time I would watch the bonuses.

Do you prefer buying discs that are extre features-rich?

Yes, but not as much as I used to. I feel an obligation to watch the features, which can make them feel like a burden sometimes. Commentary tracks used to be my favorite thing in the world, but now I often find them a real chore to get through. I'd much rather have like a 20-30 minute interview or video essay like Criterion's been doing in recent years.

Still, when a disc is barebones I can't help feeling a little ripped off.

It's tough enough for me to watch a movie, let alone more stuff.  Someday I will listen to the commentaries on all the films I love.

Do you feel extra insulted when a bare-bones dvd lists stuff like "interactive menu" as a special feature?
