Top 5 Films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe
« on: July 06, 2017, 12:25:20 AM »
I asked this on Facebook, but I suspect answers here will be more interesting:
Here are the 15 films released so far. With 2 more entries due this year...

1. Top 5 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
2. Have you seen 5?
3. Did you have to include films you don't like to get to 5?
4. Do you think your list will change after Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok?

My Answers:
1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
2. Spider-Man: Homecoming
3. Captain America: Civil War
4. Doctor Strange
5. Avengers: Age of Ultron

yes
no
and I'm not sure. Spidey has great buzz and Thor 3 has a great trailer and premise, but my Top 5 is pretty solid.

1. The Avengers
Guardians of the Galaxy

Spider-Man: Homecoming
Iron Man
Doctor Strange

2. Yes, I've seen them all. Not that I'm a comics fan (not at all actually, never read a single comic book except for Watchmen), but I like the cinematic universe concept, and I think Marvel gets it better than the others who have tried so far, though the average MCU film is not particularly good.

3. Nope.

4. Maybe Spider-Man (edit: yep), but I don't think Waititi will really work for Ragnarok unfortunately. It'll probably be better than the past Thor movies though.

I'll repeat what I posted on FB:

1. Winter Soldier
2. The Avengers
3. Guardians of the Galaxy
4. Guardians of the Galaxy 2
5. Iron Man

I've seen them all.
No, I really enjoyed all of these.
I have hopes that the new Thor movie might cause me to change my list.

There is already a whole poll for the MCU, but what the heck, I like lists.

Avengers: Age of Ultron
Captain America: Civil War
The Avengers
Captain America: Winter Soldier

Iron Man

2. Yes, I've seen them al...Wait, what? 5? Of course I've seen five!

3. Is that a trick question?

4. Sure hope so. I've heard good things about Homecoming (I am looking at you Corndog, don't play with my hopes).

2 and 3 are what I'm most interested in reading. MCU is dominating the direction of mainstream cinema, with everyone trying to quickly build a Universe of characters. I was surprised to realize the MCU is less than 10 years old and has only released 15 films (16 this weekend), which means to make a Top 5 you have to have watched a third of the entire series. That seems unlikely, but the fact that most have seen at least that many speaks well for the ability of the brand. Which brings me to question 3. Just because you've seen 5 doesn't mean you've enjoyed 5, but from what I'm gathering, despite the negatives people are pretty happy overall with what Marvel is doing. (I wonder if the same could be said of the 12 Muppet features or the 13 Star Trek films? Is Marvel on its way to having a better average than the 26 James Bond films?)

Which means Sam, I'd love to hear a Deathmatch decision of which two "meh..." titles would complete your Top 5.

Also why I'm hoping to hear from some of our less mainstream Filmspotters, like roujin and goodguy.

I dunno, I'd have to rewatch The Avengers, Ant-Man, Civil War and Iron-Man and the prospect of doing that just makes me roll my eyes.

Unranked within each tier:

B-
The Avengers
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Iron Man 2
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Captain America: Civil War
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

C+
Iron Man
Guardians of the Galaxy

C
Doctor Strange
Thor
Thor: The Dark World
The Incredible Hulk

Unseen
Captain America: The First Avenger
Iron Man 3
Ant-Man

I can't remember for sure whether I saw First Avenger or not, but I definitely caught ten minutes of Iron Man 3 while theater-hopping. I slept through pieces of Thor 2, which probably helped elevate it over the original Thor.

I'll be making an effort to see the new Spider-Man and Thor, partly because they both had decent trailers (the new Thor promises to be the best of that series so far, partly because it seems largely villain-less; just like Cars 3 looks to be the best of that series, because it seems largely Mater-less), but also just because I like being a part of the conversation.

So I've seen 12/15, and half of those get a mild recommendation from me. I wouldn't have to include any films I dislike to generate a top five, though my general cutoff for a Top 5 list is films that grade B or higher, so I'd consider this a very weak top five. I think of these movies less as films than as episodes of a really expensive tv show. And like with most tv shows, the range of quality hovers narrowly between passable entertainment and not quite successful entries. No real highs or lows. Most of these films have lost my interest in their third acts, when they should really be at their most exciting. Poorly imagined villains are largely to blame, but their are other issues as well.

Yea, the villains are what brings down so many Marvel films for me. Loki is probably the only good villain they've produced. The rest are just flavor of the week.

Also, assuming Iron Man 2's poop joke is a big reason for your high ranking.
