1SO I don't know how you can make a list like that, with that level of detail and method, and not include the Joker.
I missed the most obvious answer... and was so proud of myself for remembering Hans Landa.

Li'l Zé was the first person I thought of and then I forgot while making my list. Corrections have been made.

Voldermort is good as a force of nature, the tip of a spear that drives darkness into the Wizarding World, and with more charisma than any of the villains in Lord of the Rings.

I have the same problem with Voldemort I have with all dark Lords and ultimate evils: objective evil is not interesting. Voldemort is evil because he is evil, and he is more powerful than anyone but that doesn't mean anything because JKR never explained what a powerful wizard was, and he is exuberant, and that is the entire extent of his personality. At least Sauron looks scary ; I always thought Voldie's look was more silly than anything. And Gollum is heaps more layered than snake-nose too.

1. Mankind (The Turin Horse)
2. Gender role bullshit (Innocence, Sita Sings the Blues)
3. Colonialism (The New World)
4. Cancer (Dying at Grace)
5. Society that marginalizes the economically disadvantaged (Wendy and Lucy)

I don't know which list I like better: DH's or MT's.

I'm not sure I have a good candidate for 2001. I'd expect Denzel Washington as Alonzo in Training Day to be a decently popular choice. Or maybe Team Evil in Shaolin Soccer (which I still haven't seen). Brian Cox was memorable as Big John Harrigan in L.I.E., as was Nick Stahl as as Billy Kent in Bully, though everyone in that movie is a villain, if memory serves. I guess really the only answer for me is the Nazgűl in The Fellowship of the Rings.

I think I'd love how awkward it'd be, or how awkward it should be.

Thanks for the reminder.

2002: Anyone but Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin in Spider-Man and Charlton Heston as himself in Bowling for Columbine. Christopher Lee has two chances, as Count Dooko (!) in Attack of the Clones and Saruman in The Two Towers, but nah. I'm not a fan of Brad Dourif as Wormtongue in The Two Towers either. Staying negative, I couldn't appreciate Daniel Day-Lewis as Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York because that movie was too much of a mess. I need to revist City of God, so I can't speak to Leandro Firmino as Li'l Zé.

So I'm not sure where that leaves me. Henry Kissinger in The Trials of Henry Kissinger? I guess I'll go with Geraldine McEwan as Sister Bridget in The Magdalene Sisters, even though I have the haziest of memories. Wait, scratch that. Brian Cox as Robert McKee in Adaptation..

That's a wild train of thought. I like Charlton Heston one.
