Hold On To Your Butts: Junior Watches All the Things
« on: July 28, 2017, 10:55:06 AM »
Like many of you, I'd guess, I own a good number of movies that I haven't actually watched yet. I did a count yesterday and for me, that number lies at around 99, about half of which are Criterion blind-buys. I'm tired of it! So now it's time to watch all of them. I think I finally know myself well enough to not commit to a schedule or an order, but I do have a general goal of watching all of these movies (listed below) in the next year. I will write at least a little review here for each, and then at the end I'll be done.

I'm interested in hearing if any of y'all have favorites in and among these films, as I'll likely prioritize those to some degree. Ok, here's the list:

Wait, you've never watched Lawrence? Consider that your dictation for my month.

Lawrence of Arabia
Trois Couleurs: Rouge

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Trois Couleurs: Blanc
Dirty Harry
The Wages of Fear

The Animatrix
Million Dollar Baby
The Lives of Others

Alexander
Cool Hand Luke
McCabe and Mrs. Miller
Une chambre en ville
Lola

A Woman Under the Influence
8 1/2
Breathless
Ben-Hur

I also like some of the Tatis but I can never distinguish them.

Can I hold on to someone else's butt instead? That is much more fun.

EDIT: Added Lola. It's the Demy movie, right?

I was saving Larry for the biggest screen I had access to, which I only just got, so it's high on my list. I'm very excited.

I'm most interested to hear your reactions to:

Stalker
Pather Panchali
A Brighter Summer Day
Close-Up
Make Way for Tomorrow
McCabe and Mrs. Miller
Frankenstein (have you seen this one before?)
Fitzcarraldo
Forbidden Planet

Given the new, big screen, I'd say Forbidden Planet demands to be watched first.

These are all high on my radar as well. I was just reading your new top 100 and got really excited about Forbidden Planet, so I'll try to get to that one soon. I think I have seen Frankenstein before, but I don't really remember it. I'll probably double feature that with Bride, which I certainly haven't seen, and probably during Shocktober to stick with the theme. I also just read Frankenstein a few months back for the first time, so I want to do a little compare and contrast with that.

A Woman Under the Influence-- Two of the greatest performances of all time.
Pather Panchali-- I finally saw it this last year.  Why did I not see this before?
Dekalog (10)-- My favorite TV series of all time.
The Last Temptation of Christ-- Best portrayal of Jesus on film
Safety Last!-- More than just a stunt.  But what a stunt!
Frankenstein-- Probably a nostalgia pick for me.  But it is perfect.
The Invisible Man-- Really scared me as a kid
Always-- Dumb plot with some moments of brilliance and stunning beauty
Mutiny on the Bounty (35)-- One of the films that convinced kid-me that old movies were cool
Doctor Zhivago-- Big screen porn
Cool Hand Luke-- Paul Newman being brilliant in his best character study
Dirty Harry-- Guilty pleasure
Million Dollar Baby-- Watch it so you can sell it to someone else because you'll never want to watch it again.  It's good, but... tough.
The Animatrix-- Watch it twice to replace the two Matrix sequels.
A Star Is Born-- Garland version, I hope.  Yeah, I cried, so what?
Lawrence of Arabia-- WTH?  Why have you not watched this?
The Lives of Others-- I loved this when I saw it.  I need to watch it again.
