Top 5 Auteur Trilogies
« on: August 28, 2017, 01:28:27 PM »
Because we have not split all the hairs yet.

Auteur is an imperfect term but the only other opposite to blockbuster that I can think about is arthouse and that is equally problematic. The long form of the question is:

What are the Top 5 auteur-driven trilogies, or trilogies of a non-blockbuster nature?

Sam, if you write a list of 5 blockbusters, I swear to Mithra...

Transformers? Oh, that's more than three films.

Actually, now that I think about it, since the Godfather turned out to be a blockbuster it is perhaps maybe better to ignore that part of the sentence. Auteurs can sometimes make money.

Transformers? Oh, that's more than three films.

I would love it if someone found a reason why some combination of those could be considered a trilogy. But then. does anyone like them enough to actually list them?

Three Colors
Golden Heart Trilogy (Von Trier)
The Human Condition
The Before Trilogy
Wong Kar Wei Trilogy (Wild, Mood, 2046)
Cornetto Trilogy

Tsai's Walker films really has four: Walker, Walking on Water, Journey to the West and No No Sleep, but I'd count the first three as a trilogy.  Still, I won't put it on my list because who knows how many he'll make in his "retirement".
