Do you have a top 5 in the genre?
My problem with that list is I was getting out of the genre right as I was starting to explore some of it's more ambitious and artistic landmark films. For example, I am not a fan of A Touch of Zen
or Come Drink With Me
though I will return to them to try and find out why, because I realize they are Essential to the genre. I also prefer the visual imagination of House of Flying Daggers
to the overly-artsy stylization of Hero
If I was building a Top 5 List, I'd start by looking at Jackie Chan and Jet Li films, and by all those measuring sticks I think Drunken Master II
would be on top. The action is insane, even by Jackie Chan standards, but also the characters are a great deal of fun. I can't exclude Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
(2000), which is the obvious American choice, but that's with good reason. Eight Diagram Pole Fighter
would probably be #3 and I'd have to consider The 36th Chamber of Shaolin
, which has a really good story to balance the fight scenes. Much as I like a Top 5 to be the Five Best, I'd feel guilty if Jet Li didn't take a slot, but it'd be a hard choice between...Fist of Legend
(1993) (with Michelle Yeoh)Fong Sai Yuk
(1993) (aka. The Legend)
all of these I would put above the more widely known Once Upon a Time in China
A definite Honorable Mention to Wing Chun
(1994), starring Michelle Yeoh.
p.s. If you (or anyone) is thinking about a possible future Marathon, I'd be very happy to revisit these films.
