1SO vs. All the Directors - Progress Report
« Reply #760 on: November 12, 2020, 10:32:22 PM »
In two years I've now watched 500 films covering 227 Directors.
I just ranked 300 Directors over 655 films.

The very recent April Story is the best title I've seen since Wild Boys of the Road (1933) back in Feb. 2019.
Other recent discoveries…
Tora! Tora! Tora! (Richard Fleischer, 1970)
The Decline of Western Civilization (Penelope Spheeris, 1981)
Kitty (Mitchell Leisen, 1945)
The Rocket from Calabuch (Luis García Berlanga, 1956)
The Glass Shield (Charles Burnett, 1994)
Broadway Musketeers (John Farrow, 1938)
In Darkness (Agnieszka Holland, 2011)

New to the Bottom of the List…
Up! (Russ Meyer, 1976)
Vixen (Russ Meyer, 1968)
Hotel Monterey (Chantal Akerman, 1972)
Pulp (Mike Hodges, 1972)
Lilith (Robert Rossen, 1964)
The Bed Sitting Room (Richard Lester, 1969)

300 Directors Rated
5 Stars – 8
4 Stars – 11
3 ½ Stars – 16
3 Stars (Very Good) – 24
3 Stars (Good) – 60
3 Stars (Okay) – 63
2 ½ Stars – 52
2 Stars – 54
1 ½ Stars – 9
½ Star – 1
0 Stars – 2

1SO vs. All the Directors - Paul Leni

#302 Paul Leni Ranked List

I didn't even know this thread existed. Never connected the dots even though Man Who Laughs and Cat and the Canary are considered among the most influential early films. There's only one real choice for me here, The Last Warning (1928).

Re: 1SO vs. All the Directors - Joseph H. Lewis

#303 Joseph H. Lewis Ranked List

Gun Crazy was one of the first movies I was excitedly looking for as soon as I heard about it. (This is back in the time when there was no internet or video store to satisfy such wants.) I crushed on images of Peggy Cummins, even dating a girl who looked like her. Then there's that famous long take. I finally watched the film in college and it was good but couldn't possibly live up to years of such high expectations.

Lewis' films always play better on a rewatch. My Top 4 all raised up on second viewings. Everything below them I've only seen once. I was excited to see Lewis come up during Noirvember, but he's nearly tapped out for recommendations.

LIKELY:
Cry of the Hunted (1953)
A Lawless Street (1955)

#304 Lech Majewski - Haven't Seen Any

Never heard of Majewski, but sometimes this Marathon is about opening my mind to someone new. The most popular pick is The Mill and the Cross, but because Martin started the thread, I'm including the possibility of The Roe's Room. goodguy posted intriguing images from Field of Dogs.

LIKELY:
The Mill and the Cross (2011)

POSSIBLE:
The Roe's Room (1997)

MAYBE:
Field of Dogs (2014)

Completely forgot about him, and I never did get around to seeing The Mill and the Cross. Sounds a bit like Greenaway's Nightwatch, conceptually. Adding to my watchlist.

1SO vs. All the Directors - Chris Marker
« Reply #769 on: November 19, 2020, 12:36:07 AM »
#305 Chris Marker Ranked List

12 Monkeys is a remake of La Jetée by Chris Marker. This is how I learned about Marker and how I was introduced to his work. I've never heard a different story from anyone I know. You start with La Jetée and then go to Sans Soleil. It drops off sharply from there. (A.K. is about Akira Kurosawa and the production of Ran. It's basically a DVD bonus, but about KUROSAWA.)

My options don't have me excited, and some of them are very long, but I'm not going anywhere. Marker makes  documentaries, but I don't know if I'll have anything to say so I'm not waiting for DOCember.

LIKELY:
The Lovely Month of May (1963)
The Last Bolshevik (1993)

POSSIBLE:
A Grin Without A Cat (1977)

MAYBE:
Une journée d'Andrei Arsenevitch (2000)
