I dunno if I see your loving Only Yesterday but it's certainly one of my favorites.

I've watched some of his 70s Anne of Green Gables and it's fantastic.

It's one where I think I'm the only person who doesn't love it, and it doesn't stay in my memory long enough for me to remember what my problem is. I thought it was the film that uses "Country Roads" but that's Whisper of the Heart

For me it's the overlong and not always relevant flashbacks to the character's childhood. All the stuff as an adult is sweet, peaceful and warming.

#342 Isao Takahata Ranked List

Film Nerd Fight: Was the greatest filmmaker at Studio Ghibli actually Takahata and not Miyazaki? Our poll clearly suggests Miyazaki. If I lean Miyazaki it's probably because I don't love Only Yesterday like everyone else does. Much as I love Spirited Away and Totoro, they can't touch the achievement that is Grave of the Fireflies. That’s a hill to die on, but on a matter of personal tase my 2nd favorite Ghibli is Pom Poko.

Selecting some Takahata always comes down to availability. I’ll be looking for…
Horus: Prince of the Sun (1968)
The Adventure of Panda and Friends: Panda Family! (Panda kopanda) (1972)
Chie the Brat (1981)
Gauche the Cellist (1982)
Anne of Green Gables: Road to Green Gables (2010)

It may also be time to revisit Only Yesterday (1991)

Self-promotion moment where I direct you to a recent podcast I participated in and in which we discussed this very question. Miyazaki is one of my 5 all-time favorite directors, so that's where my heart lies, but Takahata is arguably the more interesting artists, especially in the different ways he uses animation to tell stories.

SPOILER ALERT: On my Films of 1991 it went from #90 to #28

For me it's the overlong
typical Takahata pacing

not always relevant flashbacks to the character's childhood.
agree

All the stuff as an adult is sweet, peaceful and warming.
Agree, but I liked the childhood life lessons more.

1SO vs. All the Directors - Nobuhiro Yamashita
« Reply #846 on: February 24, 2021, 02:09:28 PM »
#343 Nobuhiro Yamashita

Yeah, he's a little obscure to have his own poll, but I'm a huge fan of LLL, and I know some others around here are too.

Since posting this, we've added a number of directors more obscure than Yamashita. When I hosted our Director Ratings Project, Yamashita received more ratings than 94 other names. That said, most people, including myself, have only seen Linda Linda Linda.

Rather than going by ICM, I'm hoping to watch MT recommendations.
A Gentle Breeze in the Village (2007)
Moratoriamu Tamako (2013)

1SO vs. All the Directors - Terence Young

#344 Terence Young Ranked List

I'm a little disappointed. I thought I was getting Terence Fisher who has lots of Noir and Hammer Horror.

For the director who launched James Bond, it's an unimpressive filmography. With 38 features, only 20 IMDB rate above 6 and many I've never heard of, even though they star my classic Hollywood movie stars. (It's how I ended up watching That Lady, starring an eye-patched Olivia de Havilland.)

DEFINITE:
Corridor of Mirrors (1948)

1SO vs. All the Directors - Terry Zwigoff

#345 Terry Zwigoff Ranked List

Terry Zwigoff is how I ended my last Director Marathon and why I didn't want to do this one alphabetically. Since then Zwigoff has only done a TV Pilot for Amazon. He strikes me as a niche, whose narrow interest doesn't lend itself to making too many movies, a job that requires you to play well with others.

An easy choice to watch here. I haven't seen Louie Bluie (1985)

1SO vs. All the Directors - Rolf de Heer

#346 Rolf de Heer Ranked List

My history with Rolf de Heer is all thanks to Dave the Necrobumper, though I'm surprised the filmmaker isn't a little bigger in the Arthouse scene. His films are mostly well-reviewed, contain a fair amount of edge to create a discussion and give insight into a culture.

This is also good timing because my top pick to watch is The Tracker (2002), which is listed as a Western though that looks debatable.

MAYBE:
The Quiet Room (1996)
Alexandra's Project (2003)
Charlie's Country (2013)
