Stand up and say, "Though the world be against me, I will stand for my latter Scorsese! If I am wrong I don't want to be right!"  Be bold in your wrongness. :)

I would rather be wrong in my boldness. But point taken.

De Niro and Scorsese grew to epic heights together. A true collaboration with each pushing the other to be better. By the time DiCaprio came along Scorsese was a master director guiding Leo, but I can't point to a single thing Leo gave back except for box office clout, the ability to finance more expensive projects.

I wish I'd seen more of this in real time. Still, with some imagination it seems absolutely spot on.

Which actor-director combo of modern day has such a symbiotic relationship?

James Gray and Joaquim Phoenix? I am having trouble thinking of any that fit all the requirements. Philipp Seymour Hoffman and PTA? Now I'm sad...

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp should count, despite their recent output.

None of those are even close. Not good enough, not enough and too old.

Was considering Michael Shannon and Jeff Nichols but I don't think it's quite enough either.

There are not that many actors who made great movies in their youths. And while I agree the likes of Burton pale in comparison to the standard, I take umbrage at PTA being put in the same bag.

Also, I was not thinking about quality as much as the kind of collaborations and all the things 1SO said.

Third option should've been Scorsese and Christ.

I don't think Christ grew at all during their relationship and he was virtually nowhere to be seen in Silence.

Maybe Soderbergh/Clooney (maybe Damon instead)? Though Soderbergh made so much it was almost every-other movie and I don't know if he was necessarily getting better with each film but they sure were trying new things (Ocean's sequels aside).
