I would hardly call Kingsman "lighthearted" with its gory murder scenes.

It's kind of the point though. The church scene is the litmus test for the movie: it takes the gruesomeness combined with the slickness very far to dare you to either be disgusted (perfectly valid) or laugh at the absurdity of it all. I reacted with the latter and found the film very fun, though I certainly understand the opposite reaction.

I don't, not really. It's like when people object to dark humour. The movie is not condoning the violence, there is nothing there to abhor. You might not be into action scenes or have a revulsion for blood and gore, but the more extreme reactions people had to the movie were puzzling.

That's a bold statement, especially when it does condone violence in certain circumstances. Plus, there's a gigantic argument in art about whether or not showing violence is the same as endorsing it.

But that would be considered uncivil to talk about here, so  :-X

That argument may exist but I don't see why. Why should violence be any different than any other matter in that regard? And I think the argument crumbles as soon as you list a few counterexamples. Everyone can think of movies where violence is made to look appalling and intolerable. Detroit certainly didn't look like it was endorsing any kind of violence.

That's petty ad uncalled for and I think you know it. The admins do a necessary job with diligence and they rarely feel the need to step in at all. We can disagree about anything in here. Some people even contend that Back to the future is better than Die Hard. You just have to not be a dick about it.

Better not to speak of them. ;)

I hated, hated Kingsman. The Ritchie film has very surface pleasures, but is much more tolerable. Even approaches good.

Haven't seen either.

Man from UNCLE is coldwar kgb/US spy shit? Ugh, count me out times a million. I've had it with that era and spy'ish movies... it seems like it should be a good setting but somehow it always produces something very boring to watch.

It is that, but it is hardly Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. It's about two spies trying to prove who has the largest one with proper Ritchie banter and an action comedy movie plot.
