Tom Petty: Ranking the Hits
« on: October 15, 2017, 08:54:57 AM »
Still crushed by his passing. For as long as I've been listening to music Petty kept putting out hit records. Here is my complete ranking of his hits based purely on nostalgia.

Refugee
Breakdown
Runnin' Down a Dream
Don't Do Me Like That
A Woman in Love (It's Not Me)
The Waiting

Stop Draggin' My Heart Around
Even the Losers
Free Fallin'
I Won't Back Down

You Got Lucky
Here Comes My Girl
I Need to Know
American Girl
Listen to Her Heart
Change of Heart
Learning to Fly
Into the Great Wide Open
Mary Jane's Last Dance
Walls (Circus)
Yer So Bad
A Face in the Crowd
You Don't Know How It Feels
Don't Come Around Here No More

Rebels
Make It Better (Forget About Me)
Jammin' Me

* Unlike most, I didn't really hear "American Girl" until The Silence of the Lambs, so it's not one I grew up with.

** I didn't realize "A Woman in Love (It's Not Me)" was Petty, though it seems obvious now. Always loved that song. I'm a sucker for songs where the guy is blue because the woman he loves is with someone else.

I knew a number of his early hits, but I didn't really pay attention to him until the Travelling Willbury days.  Pairing him and Bob Dylan  is one of the best ideas ever.

Runnin' Down a Dream
A Face in the Crowd
Yer So Bad
I Won't Back Down
You Got Lucky
Last Night
Free Fallin'
Don't Do Me Like That
The End of the Line
Refugee
Breakdown
The Waiting
You Don't Know How It Feels
Feel A Whole Lot Better
Don't Come Around Here No More
Learning to Fly
American Girl
