I don't consider the Oscars a joke, but I do agree with the general sentiment.

The Oscars are simply what the Hollywood industry wants to reward every year. Nothing more, nothing less. Whether or not it does a "good job" is irrelevant, at least in terms of "oh my God Roger Deakins doesn't have an Oscar how is that possible ?": it just means that at no point in his career was his work deemed the absolute best by his industry.

I don't think it's cynical, I quite enjoy the Oscars, and I think most of the disappointment around it stems from a misunderstanding of what they are...though to be fair, the Oscars themselves encourage it.
