GUARDIANS is pretty cookie-cutter though as far as direction goes. Let’s not mistake credit: it’s the material that was risky, not the director behind it. Firing Wright shows us that there’s a limit to creativity within the MCU.

He wasn't fired for being creative, he was fired because he refused to work with the studio.

Is there a difference here? I don't see it. He wasn't making it the way the studio wanted, so yes, he was fired for being creative.

The problem with his ideas weren't that they were original, it was that they did not work within the framework of the MCU. I don't remember the specifics, but the story he wanted to tell did fit. You cannot expect to be able to create whatever universe you want when you've got 12 movies worth of lore to respect.

Needless to say, I would recommend everyone watch Thor.

Thor: Ragnarok  (Taika Waititi, 2017)

The theoretical paradox of an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object doesn't make for a very compelling story. Thor, Loki, and all of Asgard will never be interesting to me. There's still some occasional fun to be had here, most of it courtesy of non-Asgardians like Bruce Banner (whose plane jump is probably the film's best moment), Korg (nicely voice by Waititi), and the Grandmaster played by the always watchable Jeff Goldblum.

The trailer for Blank Panther was awful, by the way.

Grade: C+
