Top 5 Remakes of Original Screenplays

I will leave to your discretion whether or not the remakes have to be better than the originals. It's also up to you to decide what's a reboot and what's a remake.

Only counting ones where I've seen the original:

1. Imitation of Life (1959)
2. Solaris (2002)
3. The Departed
4. The Magnificent Seven
5. Ali: Fear Eats the Soul

Horror remakes are my favorites.

The Thing is better than The Thing from Another World
The (Brundle)Fly is better than The Fly
Evil Dead is better than The Evil Dead
Both Fright Nights are great...
so are both of Let (Me)(the Right One) In

His Girl Friday is probably the best of all, though.

There should be some sort of distinction, however blurry, between remakes and re-adaptations.

I think that's probably true. It gets muddled, though, when the re-adaptation takes more cues from the first version of the film than from the book that film is based on. This is most clearly seen in stuff like versions of Frankenstein where very little of the original material translates from page to screen, and certainly less than stuff from the Universal version.

Oh yay, one more pedantic distinction for my collection!

I agree with your point.

Batman Begins (2005) ?

Cannot be a remake because the story is different. Although people do say Leone's movies are remakes of Kurosawa's, so I don't know what to do with that...

Wait, but then, is The Magnificent Seven a remake? Because if the source of the source is Shakespeare...oh dear, my head is hurting.

This is why pedantic distinctions are a trap. Be loose. We're not curing cancer here, we're making dumb lists on a movie forum. Let me people pick whatever they want.
