Not sure I recognize any of those other names (assuming Nickie Caro is not Niki Caro) so Catherine Deneuve can get the full weight of my scorn.

On Thursday, the staff of Disney Animation Studios will gather on the lot for what the company is calling a "Day of Listening," with a handful of human-resources professionals present to facilitate a discussion of workplace concerns. The gathering, which Disney veterans say is unprecedented for the animation unit, comes as sources with ties to both Disney Animation and Pixar Animation Studios speculate that John Lasseter, who oversees both companies but has been on leave since November, will not return from what was characterized by Disney as a six-month "sabbatical."

Lasseter has been the chief creative officer of Pixar since its inception in 1986. His reign as the head of that company and eventually  Walt Disney Animation Studios is 31 years. To put that in perspective, the amount of time from the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs until Walt Disney's death was 29 years.

The comments that I've read are that this is sad and difficult but there is no way Disney can continue to be connected to John Lasseter. It becomes a question of will some other Animation company take the risk in order to tap into Lasseter's strengths.

And you can make all the snide comments you want about Lasseter's skill, his contribution to animation, movies and pop culture is on a level equal to Walt Disney.

In the pixar machine does he strike you as a critical creative cog, or is he primarily just the face of the company?

Critical. He's often mentioned as the person who gives some of the best notes and frequently comes up with some great ideas. Not game changers, there's a definite formula that followed him from Pixar to Disney, but moments within the story that strike exactly what the animators are going for. He's also the one who believes deeply in research above and beyond, which is why the films cost so much more than other studios.

Sounds like it he'll be an awfully tough person to replace. I wonder what the "mood at the office" is.

Pete Docter is currently assuming his responsibilities at Pixar. Word is Docter will eventually share the load with Andrew Stanton so that both can continue to make movies. Meanwhile, Disney Animation may put Jennifer Lee (Frozen) and Zootopia co-directors Rich Moore and Byron Howard in charge, though I've also read John Musker and Ron Clements may be offered the job. That's a lot of people brought in to replace Lasseter, who was also Principal Creative Advisor for Walt Disney Imagineering, where he helps design attractions for Disney Parks.

Do we know exactly what he did?
They keep calling them "missteps," and for every article I find that downplays his behavior there are ones that say it's worse than we really know. I've read nothing on the level of Harvey Weinstein or the rest. Here's from the Hollywood Reporter

Quote
Lasseter was known — in the words of one insider — for "grabbing, kissing, making comments about physical attributes." Multiple sources say Lasseter would drink heavily at company social events such as premiere parties, but these sources have said the behavior was not always confined to such settings.

When Pixar had such a listening event several years ago, sources say, employee complaints were aired about Lasseter's behavior generally. When Pixar co-founder Ed Catmull delivered that feedback to Lasseter, one animator says, Lasseter was so angry that he didn't speak to Catmull for more than a week.
