The Letterboxd List is up.

Glow: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (the DOC, not the series) is the first doubled Discovery.

Fire in the Sky has one great sequence I will never forget. I am no longer the only person who likes Ravenous.

... I currently have 31 Discoveries, but will probably edit it down as I build my post.

My preliminary list has 41 entries. I too have to edit it down and hope I find the time to collect screencaps for a proper post. Here is a sneak peek on Letterboxd for the curious.

Because of this thread last year, I kept track this time around ! Still mostly canonical stuff, but you know. The first 7 are top 100 material (8 and 9 maybe). Pretty sure Sanjuro is the last film I'll watch this year, so unless that makes it in this is final.

1. Kaguyahime no monogatari / The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (Isao Takahata, 2013)

2. Persona (Ingmar Bergman, 1966)

3. Se7en (David Fincher, 1995)

4. Der letzte Mann / The Last Laugh (F.W. Murnau, 1927)

5. Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (Tom Stoppard, 1990)

6. Unforgiven (Clint Eastwood, 1992)

7. Brief Encounter (David Lean, 1945)

8. Idi i smotri / Come and See (Elem Klimov, 1985)

9. Majo no takkyûbin / Kiki's Delivery Service (Hayao Miyazaki, 1989)

10. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Edgar Wright, 2010)

11. Du rififi chez les hommes (Jules Dassin, 1955)

12. Kakushi-toride no san-akunin / The Hidden Fortress (Akira Kurosawa, 1958)

13. Modern Times (Charles Chaplin, 1936)

14. Suna no onna / Woman in the Dunes (Hiroshi Teshigahara, 1964)

15. Viskningar och rop / Cries and Whispers (Ingmar Bergman, 1972)

16. Seppuku / Harakiri (Masaki Kobayashi, 1962)

17. Das Boot (Wolfgang Petersen, 1981)

18. Before Sunrise (Richard Linklater, 1995)

19. Sans toit ni loi / Vagabond (Agnès Varda, 1985)

20. Rosemary's Baby (Roman Polanski, 1968)

Full list (45 films) here.

I am no longer the only person who likes Ravenous.

Huh, interesting. I associate the film more with Bondo (and maybe Junior) than with you, though looking at the Ratings Project, I think it might have been AAAutin's Top 100 list that earned the film its initial inclusion there (with colonel_mexico's Top 100 list coming after). Bondo, Junior, and KasperL all rated it more highly.

Damn, I miss Ratings Project stats. Quick, someone grow our forum population 500% and extend my days by six hours.

Before adding goodguy to Letterboxd: 108 of 126 86%
After figuring in goodguy's Prelim List: 109 of 167 65%

I hope some others will include a sentence or two about what makes these Discoveries.

I had never watched them before ? I was surprised by some of the titles on your list since I'm assuming you had seen the likes of Cool Hand Luke before ?

Swiss Army Man   8/10

Surprise me. That's what I sometimes think going into a comedy. Put me on my heels and don't let me anticipate the gag or the punchline. Swiss Army Man was an experience I did not see coming. I was charmed and made to laugh due to the films willingness to be gross, silly and imaginative. There are magical uplifting moments with such otherworldly ingredients, the only other films I could think to compare it to would be Miyazaki's. It has similar good-hearted qualities in the strange world it creates. Fart-felt entertainment at it's best.

The Hunt   9/10

Powerful sad. I imagine this movie will always come to mind any time anything approaching this subject is brought up. As a viewer the pace at which the film progresses feels cruel, and yet there is no needless knife-twisting, it is simply thorough and documents something terrible... so the result is honest.

The year in review:
-61 new movies watched
-27 movies revisited

Best rewatches:
-Interstellar (twice)
-Guardians of the Galaxy (twice)
-Shawshank Redemption
-It Follows

Most disappointing rewatches (formerly favourites)
-Max Mad Fury Road
-Collateral
-Gravity
-Zombieland
-The World's End

Worst movies I watched this year:
-Silence (2016)
-Tremors 4 (2004)
-Jason Bourne (2016)
-Alienate (2016)

Seen it twice. The list combines everyone’s individual lists.
