Coen Brothers Deathmatch
« on: January 07, 2018, 12:12:55 PM »
Over at their main thread these three films are the clear favorites.
They are the top 3 on IMDB with 8.2, 8.1 and 8.1
On Letterboxd, all 3 are rated 4.2

So, eliminating all other choices from their filmography, which of these deserves to be known as their best?

I've always been a bit underwhelmed by The Big Lebowski.  It's a character comedy I don't find especially funny.

Between Fargo and No Country, it's a tough choice, not just because they are very different films.  But Fargo has a great balance of humor and tension and our protagonist is one of the best characters the Coens ever created.

Fargo it is.

None are in my top 5 Coen films but I guess if I had to go with one it would be Fargo.

I think the whole point of the poll is to get the opinion of people like you.

Fargo, very easily. It is an eternal puzzlement to me that the other two are often considered their best. Well, I guess I get it for No Country because it's atypically dour for them, so it stands out.

Fargo
The Big Lebowski
No Country for Old Men

Exactly. I believe the old Coen thread allowed for 3 votes so you could select all 3 options, but if you eliminate that along with other films people might consider their best, what do you choose between these three?

I went with Fargo, which is the clear winner for me because I'm not a fan of Lebowski, but I wonder how many think No Country is the better effort?

I also wonder how many believe they will make another film at this level? Any new Coen Bros movie has the potential to be this good, but what are the odds they will once again make a modern masterpiece?

Hail Caesar! is better than at least some of those in the opinion of two members of this forum.

I like Hail Caesar way more than I like Fargo and possibly No Country. Need to rewatch the first two.
