Top Coming of Age Films
« on: January 12, 2018, 06:53:45 PM »
I'm thinking about the praise Lady Bird has been receiving and wondering how people would match that film to some of the classics of the coming-of-age genre.

Some classics that people might consider would be: The 400 Blows, The Graduate, American Graffiti or Stand By Me.

As a first shot at this theme, I would certainly include the following films in my consideration:

Boyhood
The Fault in Our Stars
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Harold and Maude
Rushmore

When I went to consider films that might fit, I often found that if I thought they were great they didn't fit well, and if they fit they weren't quite as good. I also don't think that many get carried on as "canon", because I can't think of or perhaps avoided many old ones. I guess it's to be expected aiming for something "formulaic" that they're either sub-par or forgotten or both - but maybe here are some that sort-of-don't-fit-but-are-still-great films!

Goodbye, First Love
Our Little Sister
Gespenster
One Hundred Days After Childhood
Bunheads (You can't win if you don't cheat!)

Others that might fit:
Only the Young
Take Care of My Cat
Attenberg

With a relatively broad definition:

1. Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi / Spirited Away
2. Black Swan
3. Room
4. Boyhood
5. La haine

Honorable mentions: The Godfather, Fanny och Alexander, pretty much everything studio Ghibli has ever produced.

Rushmore
Almost famous
Spirited Away
An Education
Inside Out

The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Easy A

In no particular order.

I am not comfortable with how wide the definition of the genre is.

2. Black Swan

The Talented Mr. Ripley
Toy Story 3
Silence of the Lambs

The characters here are too old.
