Guess the film by reading a Filmspotter's review!
« on: January 31, 2018, 02:23:55 PM »
Here's a fun game, an interesting experiment and a way to revisit long forgotten reviews, all wrapped up in one. We have generated a TREMENDOUS number of reviews on this forum when you think about it.

Consider just these threads:
-Write about the last movie you watched (2006-2010) - 39,209 posts
-Respond to the last movie you watched (Jan 2011 - Nov 2013) - 19,960 posts
-Respond to the last movie you watched (2013-2016) - 10,011 posts
-Respond to the last movie you watched (ongoing) - 1,962 posts

If every 10th post is a review (which I think is a conservative estimate), that's still over 7,000 reviews. And that's just the Respond To threads. If you were to include brackets, marathons, and some of the other nooks and crannies in which people post their thoughts, I think we'd be well over 10,000 reviews. Quite a remarkable thing isn't it? :)

And you know what's really fun (and maybe funny) about this game, there'll be times it'll be your own review and you might not recognize it! :))

Alright, not to rub it in, but you should be kicking yourself for not setting your TiVo to record this movie.  Hopefully TCM shows it again soon (unforunately, it's not on the December or January schedule), because DVD isn't an option.  Leonard Maltin is even more wrong about xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx than he was about Dope Street.  He gives it 2 stars and writes, "Intriguing little film about a hired killer and what makes him tick; ultimately sabotaged by pretentious dialogue and posturing."  I agree with "intriguing," but he loses me after that.  I'm not even sure I would call this a "little film." I mean, technically, it probably is, but it's so well done, so confidentally executed, it rises well above any B-movie categorization or expectations.

...

It goes on, but maybe that's enough. :)

Bonus pts if you can guess who wrote it, weeeeeeeeeee!

Good idea for a game! No idea on the movie, but I will guess 1SO 9was between him and MartinTeller) for the reviewer, since it mentions TCM and appears to be about a Noir?

Off by a couple of years MT, but I think you're certainly in the right ballpark.

Corndog, neitheir 1SO or MT authored this review. :)

Great idea, smirnoff. You're a game-generating treasure.

I would've guessed 1SO or MT also, since it seems to be about a noir film. Whoever it is shares my enthusiasm for extensive comma clause usage. There's also the puzzle of who would go to Maltin.

*imagines MT attacking this noir puzzle like a cat with a treat dispenser*

Based on the Maltin tidbit, I would guess pixote. But the TiVo and TCM comments also possibly suggest Junior to me.

Le Samurai is colder, MT. Chronologically speaking. :)

Yup, it's one of those two. :)

My first instinct was guessing Junior, back during his insufferable Borzage phase.  :D
