Filmspots 2018: Eligibility Questions
« on: February 15, 2018, 12:43:36 AM »
As outlined in the FAQ, films are eligible up to a three-year period, starting with their first theatrical release, but with five limiting factors. Films are no longer eligible in subsequent years after any of the following occur:

1) The film gains a wide theatrical release in the US (playing simultaneously on more than 100 or so screens).

2) The film debuts on DVD in the US.

3) The film earns a Filmspot nomination.

4) The film is a made-for-tv film and airs on US television.

5) The film's US rights are exclusively owned by a streaming service (such as Netflix) and the film premieres on that service.

(See here for the origin of these guidelines.)

I'll keep track of films with questionable eligibility below.

I got a little more strict this year in determining re-eligibility, basically using the more arbitrary guideline of "was this film readily available to be seen in time for voting in 2017?". Let me know if you say anything in either the Eligible or the Ineligible list that seems out of place.

Also let me know if any of the Eligible titles become readily available somewhere.

For my part, I'd like to encourage people to watch School Life on Hulu, a pleasant portrait of teachers and students at an Irish boarding school. (It's also available to rent digitally at sites like Amazon.)

I think Nocturama's the only carryover I've seen, so that makes things tidy for me (especially since I'm not gonna be picking it for anything). I was curious about it since I watched it on Netflix in November. Is the point of making the criteria not appearance on Netflix (or similar) generally but being an "exclusive" is that if it is actually a Netflix exclusive branded film that is the extent of its distribution whereas a film that simply is streaming on Netflix but is not exclusive could then expand wider at a later point (on DVD or other streaming)?

I am seeing Faces Places in the theatre on Monday!

Which Ava? Both would be Debut Features...

I would guess the latter (directed by Léa Mysius), as I seem to remember goodguy giving it good rating on Letterbox'd (and it looks like he hasn't logged the other one at all).

Thanks Teproc, good investigating!

Yes, Teproc is right. And I always include IMDb links on my Personal Ballot to avoid such confusion.

But that other Ava looks interesting as well. Would be fun to have two films with the same title nominated. Has that happened before?

Hmm, yeah, that's a tricky one. I didn't realize Nocturama had been on Netflix. Here's the full list of titles I marked as ineligible due to Netflix/Amazon availability:

AlphaGo
Graduation
Hounds of Love
I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore
Icarus
Jerry Before Seinfeld
Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond
Kaatru Veliyidai
Krisha
Landline
Losing Sight of Shore
LoveTrue
The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)
Mudbound
Okja
Rat Film
To the Bone
The Villainess
Wheelman
Wild

For some of those, I'd consider changing their status to eligible if they receive a separate DVD release in 2018. If that makes any sense.

I would argue Netflix exclusive movies, i.e. Mudbound, Meyerowitz Stories, etc., should only be eligible in the year in which they become available on the platform. It is difficult to know when other things are added and made available., like Nocturama.

Yeah, that's the current guideline, with Netflix movies mirroring eligibility for HBO movies. Amazon makes things tricky, though, especially with their A24 partnership. Basically I'm just trying to reduce clutter this year by applying the logic test of "is there really a likelihood that this film will gain viewers this year?" ... which is easier said than done.

I watched My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea last night, so I'm doing my part!
