I’ve seen fewer films in the past five months than any other five-month span in recent memory, with just one 2018 film in that span (Spider-verse yesterday). Not sure I’ll even be able to submit a Filmspot nominations ballot at this rate, which would be a first. Anybody want to suggest like a top 20 “must-see” films of the year, with respect to FYCs? Not necessarily the top 20 best films, but rather the movies that are mostly likely to be the most discussed in our year-end conversations.

I’m also looking for documentary suggestions, since that’s the Filmspot category where it’s easy to have an impact while only watching a handful of films.

Have to imagine that Minding The Gap pretty much has the doc category to itself this year, even with strong showings from the genre as a whole (theoretically), but FLY will finally be on the Wiseman train this year, so I'd recommend Monrovia if it's accessible anywhere.

I'll try and give the others a thought in terms of my own speculation as to what the convo starters will be and stray from my own list of essentials, since I think there's a gap of its own there.

I suppose I should’ve said “Final (rape) scene”, but in any case, I am really surprised by the generality of the response.  With the tone off the voice of the Queen and look on Abigail’s face, I don’t see any meaningful difference between what’s happening in the final scene of the film, in terms of use of power, and what Harvey Weinstein was accused of - other than the gender of the perpetrator, that is.

From a legal standpoint rape implies penetration. What happens is something, to be sure, but I'm not sure I'd want to cheapen that word to describe it. And in the context of a film that is basically chock full of manipulation, it feels less like abuse and more like turnabout is fair play.

Into the Spider-Verse

Best Picture/Directors/Adapted Screenplay
Best Art Direction
Best Editing
Best Scene (Dramatic) - Miles Getting to the Last Fight
Best Scene (Comedic) - Miles And Peter Attached with Webbing
Best Ensemble
Best Soundtrack
Best Score

Second these! I'd call the Dramatic Scene "Leap of Faith".

Into the Spider-Verse
Best Animated Film
Best Line: "Looks like a child dressed like Spider-Man dragging a homeless corpse behind a train."

And second these as well!

Docs I've seen I highly recommend:
Minding the Gap
Shirkers
Science Fair
McQueen

Docs I really want to see before the Filmspots:
Hale County This Morning, This Evening
Monrovia, Indiana
Bisbee '17
Won't You Be My Neighbor?
Three Identical Strangers

I started Crime + Punishment on Hulu the other day and bumped against the filmmaking right way. Not sure I'll go back to it.

This was the year Frederick Wiseman finally clicked for me ... if it’s not already nominated, I definitely want to nominate.
