Ranking The Top 5 Movies directed by David Lean
« on: February 24, 2018, 07:55:21 PM »
David Lean was truly one of the greatest directors of all time! There are not words to describe the size of its ambition and artistry, far beyond his already gigantic technical expertise and visual storytelling abilities. But even tough he is known primarily for his epics, he was also able to bring an extremely intimacy to the characters, effortless transitioning between the macro of, for example, the huge desert of Lawrence Of Arabia, and the micro, the intimacy. At his best, he avoided the possibilita that the epic scope of his movies would make them shallow, working closely with his writers in each film, a man full of passion for the cinema.

His most notorious and critically acclaimed movies are:

- Brief Encounter (1945)
- Great Expectations (1946)
- Oliver Twist (1948)
- The Bridge On The River Kwai (1957)
- Lawrence Of Arabia (1962)
- Doctor Zhivago (1965)

So, let's rank his top 5 movies! And vote what is, in your opinions, his best movie.

Hello, matbezlima.

We have a sub-board containing hundreds of Directors including David Lean where his poll already has dozens of votes and the comments contains a number of ranked lists. (Here's mine.)

I'm personally thrilled to see your passion for Lean, who doesn't get much discussion except from people who feel like they begrudgingly need to watch Lawrence of Arabia at some point.

There's a renascence of films that are influenced by Brief Encounter, though: Carol, Phantom Thread, The History Boys.

I wish as many people had seen this one as have seen Bridge or Lawrence.  I had to vote for Lawrence, which is a past love and a magnificent powerhouse, but Brief Encounter is the focus of my tender longing.

Begrudgingly? Lawrence is the shit! I'd happily rewatch it next time I have four hours available.

Maybe I should see more Lean but I am not a fan of Great Expectations and Doctor Zhivago as books. Should I try Brief Encounter?

I loved Brief Encounter almost as much as Lawrence.  It isn't epic, but it is powerful.  I'm not sure if it would be your cup of tea, DH, but it certainly wouldn't be a waste of your time, as it influenced many films.

Well, it certainly is not as long as Lawrence.
