The Outlaw

Of all the obvious, glaring, upstaging at every turn, gimmicks, this movie is unsurpassed. I'm so distracted, I can hardly pay attention to the dialogue. Could we tone it down a little and not be so in your face with the on the nose embellishing? Huh? I'm talking about the music. What did you think I was talking about? :)) Flutes punctuate each glimpse of nature, strings soar with matters of the heart, wah wah mutes hand hold us through comedic moments and the orchestra crescendos for sexual culminations, consented to or no, until I can't stand it anymore. Stop the music! I don't need the score to be my nursemaid. I swear, if there was flatulence in the script, they'd find a musical instrument to represent it. The film does have the decency to quiet down for a scene near the end and the effect is of grateful relief.

On a more positive note, kudos to Thomas Mitchell and Walter Huston for being game. They are the bright spots in a rather stilted, misogynistic Western.
