By the way, looking at my list for "Heart of Gold", I'm pretty sure it was a euphemism for "Movies about prostitution" as opposed to literally films with a heart of gold.

That's pretty good! Love the gif usage. I'm gonna try to do some pics later on.

025. Revenge Movies
You could probably say that Alexander's takedown of Vergerus is an act of vengeance. Uncle Isak's actions have a tinge of that as well, there seems to be a history between him and Vergerus.

027. Badasses
I'm gonna go with a weird one here: Aron Retzinsky, the less-weird nephew of Uncle Isak's. He's knowledgeable and sly, not afraid to blaspheme or scare the crap out of a little kid, but he also respects Alexander and kind of shepherds him during his brief stay there.

029. Foreign Language Films
Obviously. Two different languages, even!

030. Movies with a Conscience
I've got about 35 pages on this if you want to read them.

031. Actresses
Gunn Wållgren as the grandmother is supremely good. Every time she's on screen you can breathe a little easier. She's not a perfect character, she has flaws, but it is a perfect, flawless performance.

032. Actors
Jan Malmsjö as the Bishop Edvard Vergerus is just an all-time great performance. The perfect simpering arrogance mixed with pathetic frailty later on. Throw in that he was primarily known as a musical actor (he appeared in stage versions of Cabaret, Victor/Victoria, and My Fair Lady, plus he had a hit with a cover of Puff the Magic Dragon) and the performance is even more spectacular.

033. Movies with a Child Protagonist
This movie doesn't work if the Alexander character (or the Fanny one for that matter) is any older. He's just at that age when he's starting to figure stuff out, or at least see that there is more to the world than what was in his idyllic home earlier. That informs everything.

037. War Movies
I already wrote about how I think this is a movie about Hitler and WWII, but it's also got a tiny bit of the militaristic in its actual text. Uncle Carl is first seen amongst his Navy(?) buddies singing a militarily flavored song. It's the happiest we see him.

038. Dysfunction Families
All of them? There are 3 and none of them would qualify as functional. The Ekdahls are full of philanderers, the Vergeruses are fascistic at best, and the Jacobis keep one of their own locked up in a room all the time.

040. Death Scenes
Aunt Elsa's turn toward the lantern is so freaking haunting, and pairing that with her slow-mo run on fire just amps everything up to 11. Those two images will stay with me forever.

Ratio for this segment: 10/16 = 62.5
Total ratio: 20/40 = 50%

042. Holiday Movies
I mean, the whole opening episode is about Christmas.

043. Tragic Love Stories
I don't know what's more tragic, that Oscar and Emilie seem to have a good relationship that ends in his death or that Carl and Lydia have a terrible relationship (based on his terrible attitude) that will never end.

044. Cheating Hearts (Adultery)
The winner here is Gustav Adolf, who gets his rocks off (prematurely) with a nursemaid and can't later with his wife. Christmas!

047. Murder Mysteries
There's a police interview at the end of the film about a death that is actually (maybe) a murder, so I'm counting it.

050. Oscar Blunders
F+A actually won 4 Oscars: Cinematography, Art/Set Decoration, Costume Design, and Foreign Language Film, and it was nominated for Director and Original Screenplay. Not bad, but I would have probably given Jan Malmsjö supporting actor over Jack Nicholson for Tearms of Endearment.

052. Drinking Movies
Everybody has a glass of something (sherry?) at all times. Hence the fart joke.

053. Dystopias/Visions of the Future
Go with me a moment here. After their magical rescue from the Bishop's house, the kids listen to Isak read/recite a story from the Torah(?) about people wandering in the desert and then the story is visualized on screen and it feels a little like your standard dystopian vision. Fire for no reason, weird costumes, strange people flagellating themselves (a reference to The Seventh Seal). It's disturbing.

056. Movies about Money
I'm thinking about the scene where Isak comes to rescue the kids. It's all based around buying a trunk but there's tons of anti-Semitic shit from Vergerus about money and worldly possessions. We can see him trying to maintain the upper hand and the position of moral superiority but he also needs the money.

057. Male Dramatic Performances
Since I gave the last one to Jan Malmsjö, this one goes to Allan Edwall, who plays Oscar. His range in his short screen time is pretty impressive: he goes from actor to dad, fun to out-of-it, relatively healthy to sick to dead. Then he's great as an ineffectual ghost.

058. Female Dramatic Performances
It's gotta be Ewa Fröling as Emilie. She carries much of the dramatic heft of the movie and has a pretty interesting character arc to play. Seeing her content at the end of the movie is so powerful following what we see of her suffering.

Ratio for this segment: 10/16 = 62.5%
Total ratio: 30/58 = 51.7%
