To be fair, Garland is no mean director. Ex Machina was pretty stylish.

I think Villeneuve is an intelligent director who sometimes glosses over human nuances, so I think he worked especially well with replicants. I think Garland laughably exaggerates human nuances, so I think he worked especially well with an unexplained alien force that did crazy things to bears. Each can make fun films, and while Garland's ability to exaggerate is more in line with my general preferences, I think Villeneuve is far more capable of grappling with interesting ideas. I thought Ex Machina was far and away the worst film of the four mentioned.

Funny, I think Ex Machina is the one that best grapples with its ideas. I am not sure Villeneuve knows what he's saying half the time.

I'd prefer someone that asks questions they can't answer to someone that asks questions and then answers them poorly.

Even if those were the only two possibilities, I think I'd still prefer the latter.

I agree, but I'm not sure which one that'd tip towards. Mostly it makes me think Jonathan Glazer would deserve inclusion in this poll.

Changed my vote.  After watching more Villeneuve, I realize that he isn't committed to SF, but to extreme storytelling, wherever it may land him.  Alex, at this point, has only done SF.  I believe he will remain developing that genre.

Has he made anything interesting besides UTS?
