Please don't confuse this for "movies that are bad that you actually like".

You can hate these movies all you want yourself too.

The only thing I'm asking for is movies that were considered to be bad, but had effort put into making them and you can tell people actually cared.

Like movies that the people making them thought they might be making one of the greatest films of all time, but it just wasn't received well by anyone.

Of course directors are an obvious place to look to for "people who cared".

An example might be something like Inherent Vice which a lot of people really disliked, but clearly they were trying to make a good movie.

Do people dislike Inherent Vice?

EDIT: Either way, you can pretty much take your pick of almost any Spielberg film and you've got your answer.

Speed Racer - this film is so meticulously made. It's not perfect but it's so singular, there's nothing like it. To me - its a beautiful homage to the series.

Speed Racer and Inherent Vice are both fantastic, this list is not starting off well.

Anything made by Ed Wood from what I've heard.

Here is my contribution:

Tomorrowbland
Jupiter Descending
Valerian and the City of Roughly Twenty Five Planets (I counted)
Star Kerfuffles: Attack of the Scones

I wanted to find a fifth but that's all I got. I am pretty sure all four directors believed in their projects and worked hard on them.

I'm finding it a bit of struggle to answer because no matter what the film there's such much money, hours dedicated and careers at stake I can't help thinking people immensely care about every film that they're making.  I'd think it's the rare exception that someone working on a film would "mail it in" because there's so much "who you know" in that industry.  (I have a bit of indirect personal insight into this)

But maybe you're asking something else and I'm not quite getting it?

(Speed Racer is amazing BTW :) )

I agree with everything here.
I imagine that nearly all of these people making films are doing it because they love it. I'm sure there are exceptions but I think most filmmakers are passionate about their work.
